23-24 Literacy Source ESOL/Citizenship Inst. Spt. Mbr. Job at AmeriCorps

AmeriCorps Seattle, WA 98125

Literacy Source provides free learner-centered basic education to low-income adults in the Seattle area. We help the 1 in 6 adults in Washington state who are lacking the basic literacy or language skills necessary for self-sufficiency. For over 36 years Literacy Source has provided free classes, tutoring, and learning resources to support adult learners in basic reading, writing, math and digital literacy skills; learning English; study for a high school diploma or GED; gain work skills; or prepare to become citizens. Our success in serving adults with unique barriers begins with careful assessment of students' skills, determining goals and developing individual educational plans. Students then continue with tailored instruction, encouragement and support throughout the program year. With a small professional staff and 150+ volunteers, last year Literacy Source provided over 46,000 hours of group and individualized instruction for over 500 adult learners. Our students speak more than 50 languages and represent 65 nations. Low literacy and/or English language skills prevent too many adults from getting, keeping, and advancing in jobs, raising school-ready children, supporting their children’s’ learning and ultimately fully participating in their communities. The AmeriCorps member will support our work by teaching small group classes and provide ongoing support to students and to volunteer tutors. This is an AmeriCorps national service position. This position is contingent upon funding and is open until filled.
