GENERAL SUMMARY: Under the direction of the 9-12 school principal, this position is responsible for assisting in all operational functions of Tapestry Charter School. This is including but not limited to; monitoring and guiding educational programs, office administration, community relations, and personnel in accordance with Tapestry Charter School mission and vision. This role assumes full responsibility for school operations in the absence of the principal. The Assistant Principal is critical in supporting the mission and values of Tapestry to educate and inspire a diverse community of learners by engaging them in rigorous real-world learning experiences which prioritize intellectual, social and emotional growth.
In alignment with our strategic plan, Tapestry Charter School focuses on three dimensions of student achievement. The first dimension is mastery of skills and knowledge, the second dimension is student character and culture and the third dimension is high-quality student work. The assistant principal takes a lead role in the development and implementation of the dimension of character and culture.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- As delegated by principal, assist in development and management of daily operations, safety, and administrative processes.
- Maintain school-wide focus on high expectations of student achievement and behavior by driving key initiatives as assigned by principal and Compass leadership.
- Effectively build and maintain relationships with students, staff, parents, and community stakeholders that establish mutual trust and respect.
- Develops and cultivates a school wide culture that fosters positive relationships across all levels.
- Lead and participate in appropriate staff meetings and training.
- Work collaboratively with the principal on human resource related matters including recruitment activities, evaluation, discipline, performance management and other matters as deemed appropriate.
- Lead projects as discussed with principal including; long-term strategic planning, cycle of inquiry-driven instructional improvements, charter renewal, or any other projects required.
Student Safety:
- As delegated by principal, assist in development and management of daily operations, safety, and administrative processes. Adopts and manages processes to safeguard students while on campus.
- Manages emergency issues in alignment with Tapestry practices while ensuring the learning environment is positive and productive.
- Participates and trains staff on safety drills, emergency plans, and policy development related to safety.
- Investigate complaints and in collaboration with the principal determine appropriate remedies.
- Follow the framework of Restorative Practices while working with students, families and teachers.
- Design, implement, coordinate and evaluate a comprehensive behavior support program.
- Provide all stakeholders, including parents, teachers and other administrators with classroom/school-wide behavior management strategies.
- Collect DASA data and complete reports. Serve as DASA Coordinator for school.
- Complete end of year Vadir reporting.
- Administer site consequences up to and including suspension.
- Hold re-entry meetings.
- Implement and progress monitor students on behavior contracts.
- Work with principal and site administrators to hold students accountable to our Compass traits and behavioral expectations as outlined in our Code of Conduct in our student handbook.
- Oversee site consequences including detentions and suspensions (9-12).
Culture and Character:
- Oversee student activities including athletics, programs and social activities.
- Plan and organize extracurricular activities that develop student interpersonal skills and relationships, as needed.
- Track extracurricular activities for teacher stipends.
- Support school-wide initiatives.
- Support Community Meetings and student celebrations.
Classroom Instruction:
- Maintain curriculum standards through sound leadership practices that can be demonstrated through coaching, modeling and instruction for teaching staff.
- Participates in and conducts informal classroom observations and walkthroughs.
- Provide clear and actionable feedback to teachers and staff as required.
- Support the design and implementation of instructional programs.
- Plan and deliver engaging, effective professional development opportunities as needed.
- Fully support, monitor and staff the summer school program.
Required knowledge, skills & abilities:
- Excellent organization, time management and follow-up skills; high sense of urgency; demonstrated ability to successfully handle multiple projects concurrently; ability to work as a team.
- Ability to provide excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively and interact effectively with different audiences.
- Knowledge of applicable laws, Education code, regulations that govern educational practices.
- Experience with instructional leadership, including demonstrated knowledge of curriculum, assessment, and developing teachers.
- Ability to collect and analyze data.
- Familiarity and training with restorative practices.
Additional Duties:
- Demonstrate knowledge of, and support, Tapestry Charter School mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior.
- Perform other related duties as required and assigned.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Education, Educational Leadership, or similar degree required.
- NYS Certification as a school building leader required.
- Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of certified teaching and/or appropriate supervisory experience.
- Candidates with prior Assistant Principal or administrative experience in an urban school district or district with an urban population are encouraged to apply.
