The Legal Aid Society’s Civil Practice has a Paralegal I position available to support the Access to Benefits Helpline and Citywide Intake Unit. The Helpline Paralegal I supports the Helpline teams by providing support during intake, translation services, high-volume data entry, archiving, and case management. The Helpline Paralegal 1 may, if applicable, provide referrals to the appropriate outside agencies. In addition, the Helpline Paralegal I will handle a wide range of tasks that support the team. The Helpline Paralegal I may also have occasional duties at other Legal Aid Society offices or intake sites. The A2B Helpline serves as an intake line for all inquiries regarding employment, unemployment insurance benefits, homeless rights, consumer, family law, education, government benefits, including food stamps, cash public assistance, disability, Medicaid, Medicare and other health and safety net benefits handled by the Society’s city-wide units

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform administrative tasks during intakes, including gathering intake information and documents
  • Enter data on various databases, including the case management system
  • Generate daily, weekly, and monthly reports from various databases as needed
  • Maintain and update case management database
  • Obtain and copy court and office files
  • Backup and support other administrative staff
  • Assist in oral and written translation as needed
  • Create case files
  • Copy, collate, and batch documents
  • Assist with court fillings
  • Conduct off-site work as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • GED, high school diploma, four years of responsible work experience, or some combination of these is required
  • One year of experience in a legal or other relevant work (paid or unpaid) environment is preferred
  • Some relevant college level work and/or paralegal training preferred
  • Proficiency in Spanish is required
  • Strong writing, verbal, and organization skills
  • Proficiency in word processing and strong computer skills
  • Ability to learn and efficiently use new systems
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively on a team
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and/or weekends
  • Experience in and/or commitment to advocacy on behalf of low-income people is strongly desired

SALARY TRANSPARENCY

The posting reflects the range of potential salaries for the role. The specific salary offers will be dependent on candidate qualifications, including collectively bargained salary steps for unionized roles.

Salary Range
$45,585 - $65,248
