We seek applications for an adjunct (part-time) teaching position for a hybrid (blended) section of Biology 222 –Cell & Molecular Biology, in the fall quarter, September 20 – December 15, 2023: M, 10:10 am – 11:25 am, in-person lecture; WF, 10:10 - noon, inperson labs, and 75-minute, asynchronous online lecture. Compensation for the course was $4,835.82 in the academic year ’22-23, and we expect a similar or higher compensation in ’23-24 . Continued adjunct openings in General Biology, Organismal Physiology, and Ecology & Evolution are expected in winter and spring quarters, January 3 – March 21 and April 1 - June 14, 2024.
The Community Colleges of Spokane is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the position of Biology Instructor in the SFCC Life Sciences Division.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare for and instruct college-level courses in Biology in face-to-face, hybrid or online formats based on need of the department.
- Communicate expectations and establish clear grading criteria through appropriate instructional means, to include but not limited to developing course syllabi, handouts, and materials supporting the instructional process; evaluates student progress and provides clear, timely feedback.
- Provide availability and accessibility to students through a combination of scheduled office hours, e-mail, and other effective means of responsive and timely communication.
- Provide timely feedback and support to students.
- Maintain accurate records for course grades.
- May participate in department and general faculty meetings whenever germane.
- Maintain professional standards in interactions with the college community.
- Comply with state and federal law applicable to professional duties and responsibilities; follow established procedures in areas such as printing, turning in grades, bookstore orders, student safety and health issues, and related administrative processes.
- Perform other related duties as assigned or required
COMPETENCIES & OTHER REQUIREMENTS
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (Minimum Qualifications):
MS in Biology or related field.- Prior teaching experience in Biology within higher education.
- Communicating effectively in oral and written English in a classroom and with other professionals.
- Working/interacting effectively with colleagues, staff, students, administrators and others of various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Acceptance of the responsibility to promote the welfare and best interests of students at all times.
- Acceptance of and willingness to support the role that community colleges serve in higher education, and specifically the mission, values, goals and objectives of the Community Colleges of Spokane.
- Ability to perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and goals of the institution and the community/technical college system.
- Demonstrated commitment to student success in classes comprised of students with a wide range of abilities.
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting a teaching, learning and working environment that honors diversity, equity and inclusion.

CONDITIONS/TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This is an adjunct (part-time) position. Compensation will be pro-rated according to the amount of workload assigned. CCS reserves the right to cancel this recruitment without notice. Academic employees are represented by the Association of Higher Education (AHE), which is affiliated with NEA and WEA. Membership is optional.

An offer of employment will not carry with it any responsibility or obligation on the part of the District to sponsor an H1-B visa. Adjunct Faculty: Adjunct faculty must work two (2) consecutive quarters at 50% or more of full time academic load in order to qualify for benefits (based on instructional hours only). Once determined to be eligible, benefits begin on the first day of the month following the beginning of the quarter. Medical, dental, life and long term disability insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under Public Employees Benefits Board; TIAA-Cref retirement plan; leave accruals and usage are governed by the faculty master contract.
