The Department of Sociology and Criminology at Dominican University is looking for adjunct instructors to teach the following classes during the Spring 2023 semester. Successful candidates must be committed to working with first-generation, Black, and Latinx student populations. Instructors must demonstrate capacity for effective online teaching and willingness to incorporate strategies for building inclusive classrooms.
Each of these courses is offered online asynchronously. The modality for all will be online without fixed class meeting times (OWM). No campus attendance required. Some courses fulfill multiple requirements and student learning goals. Remote and local applications both welcome.

- SOC 110 INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY (3 credit hours)
Introduction to the discipline of sociology as a tool for the study of human life. Through a survey of basic sociological perspectives and theories, this course examines the social institutions of everyday life in order to become aware of the way human action and human actors shape and are shaped by their societies. Listed also in Black World Studies. This course meets the social sciences core area requirement. Maximum class size is 25. No prerequisites.
- CRIM 372- LAW AND SOCIETY (3 credit hours)
Advanced analysis of the legal order from a critical, sociological perspective. The rise of modern law and its relationship to other social institutions is treated, with consideration given to social theories of legality and current controversies within the field. Examines conceptions of American citizenship through analysis of the African-American experience and issues of civic inclusion, including review of historically important trials, civil rights organizing, and contemporary racial issues in the criminal legal system. Maximum class size is 25. Listed also in Sociology and Black World Studies. Prerequisites: Intro to Soc, Intro to Crim, and junior standing or consent of the instructor.
- SOC 240- SELF AND SOCIETY (3 credit hours)
An examination of the social science paradigms that address how human action and human actors are influenced by the actual, imagined, or implied presence of others. This course emphasizes sociological social psychology and will focus on the social construction of self and the social context of everyday behavior in terms of class, race, ethnicity, gender, and age. Themes to be explored include the development of the social self, socialization and identity, attitude formation and change, prejudice, discrimination and racism, conformity, and the determinants of attraction. Maximum class size is 25. Also listed in Communication Arts and Sciences. This course meets the social sciences core area requirement. No prerequisites.
- SOC 362- INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH METHODS (4 credit hours)
This course introduces students to the basic research methods used by sociologists, including content analysis, surveys, experiments, evaluation research, participant observation and ethnography, and qualitative interviews. It also addresses the logic of social science research and important methodological and epistemological issues. Class size is limited to 15. Prerequisite: Intro Soc and junior standing, or consent of instructor; sociology and criminology majors only.
- SOC 385- CRITICAL THEORETICAL APPROACHES TO RACE AND ETHNICITY (3 credit hours)
This course examines race theory in the United States from a "critical" perspective. It highlights the ideologies, attitudes, behaviors, and structures that produce and maintain racial inequality. Listed also in Black World Studies. Class size is limited to 25. Prerequisite: Intro to Soc and junior standing, or admission to the honors program, or consent of instructor. This course meets the multicultural core requirement.
- CRIM 265- CRIME AND SOCIAL JUSTICE (3 credit hours)
An inquiry into the relationship between state, crime, and social structure, with special emphasis on the linkages between social oppression, social inequality, and criminalization of social conduct as reflected in contemporary issues. Class size is limited to 25. This course meets the social science core area requirement. No prerequisites.
Qualifications:
Candidates should have at minimum an M.A. in Sociology or a related field; PhD or post-Master's coursework and experience teaching diverse undergraduate student populations preferred.
