We are seeking one or two part-time farm assistants to help us establish our alpaca farm here in Katy. Candidates must be honest, intrinsically motivated, intellectually curious, enjoy manual labor, possess a strong desire to work with animals, and maintain the love of caring for animals and working on a farm. Ideal candidates have FFA, 4H, veterinary technician, or farm life experience. We plan to also introduce chickens, honey bees, and goats to our farm. We currently have four alpacas, two livestock guard dogs, and two cats on the farm. Care for all the animals, including washing, grooming, trimming nails, feeding, watering, cleaning up and depositing manure, weighing, and documenting their health is critical to this position.

Physical and Mental Requirements (Essential Functions):

This position is non-sedentary. It is essential that you have the physical and mental stamina and ability to move throughout the farm in extreme weather conditions quickly and safely; to operate all equipment related to this position's job duties efficiently, safely, properly, and accurately; and to provide the highest level of customer service. You must have the physical and mental ability to perform all of the following tasks:

• Ability to move and transfer hay, feed, manure, fencing, farm equipment and other supplies, weighing up to 50 pounds, throughout the farm.
• Ability to push and pull a wheelbarrow and farm cart holding up to 100 pounds.
• Ability to occasionally lift or reach overhead supplies and equipment.
• Ability to frequently stand, kneel, twist, crouch, squat, bend, stoop, and climb ladders.
• Ability to move throughout and safely access all areas of the farm for an entire shift.
• Ability to operate and use all equipment necessary to maintain the farm (e.g. weedeater, lawnmower, dolly, wheelbarrow, sledge hammer, post hole digger, shovel, rake, hoe, shears, trimmers, saws, handheld tools, computer, scale, fencing enclosures).
• Ability to read, write, and count accurately to complete all documentation.
• Ability to utilize strong written and verbal communication skills to communicate effectively with guests and other employees.
• Ability to successfully complete all required training.
• Ability to drive or operate a vehicle to include a transport van, pick-up truck and to be able to hook-up and unhook a trailer and to maneuver the trailer both forwards and in reverse.

Candidates must be 18 years of age or older and possess a valid Texas driver's license.

Education: High school diploma is required.

Interpersonal Skills: Farm assistants will be ambassadors for our farm to a co-located orthodontic practice. As such, you will be required to memorize scripting and FAQs to provide an educational experience to the patients and family members. Duties include harnessing, leading, and moving the alpacas from the farm to the adjacent clinic, providing educational sessions, and allowing the patients to observe the alpaca in a mobile pen.

Travel: Farm assistants, from time to time, may be required to assist other alpaca farmers, transport animals between farms, assist with annual shearing, take animals to the veterinary hospital, or help transport animals to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo or to other shows.

Working Hours: Early morning and late evening availability is required. We would consider splitting shifts, upon the employee's request, to accommodate other employment or school schedules. Ability to look after the farm when the owners are traveling is required.
