Anionic Polymerization Scientist

The Anionic Polymerization Scientist position is multi-faceted in nature. We are looking for a candidate who is capable of doing benchtop synthesis as well as troubleshooting in a plant environment. This scientist would work in conjunction with our Technical Service Scientist and through the guidance of our marketing team to develop new products or improve existing ones.

This role reports to the Technical Service & Development Manager.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Focus on safety in all aspects of the working environment.
  • Polymer synthesis using solution anionic polymerization methodologies to support new product development.
  • Formulate compound recipes using experimental or current production materials to evaluate suitability for use in asphalt modification and typical elastomer applications such as tire, consumer goods, plastic modification, adhesives, sealants, and coatings.
  • Collect/interpret data and decide on a path forward for the research at hand
  • Assemble technical reports based on the work done and translate it to technical literature and presentations for customer use.
  • Provide support to our production facility.
  • Provide customer technical support on a global basis, helping guide them in the product development process or troubleshooting process/product issues where our polymers are used.
  • Work with our purchasing team to qualify alternate sources of raw materials for our production process
  • Perform literature searches related to projects to suggest explanations of observed phenomena and develop hypotheses
  • Document invention disclosure and review patent literature to create competitive intelligence.
  • Organize and pursue priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Working collaboratively in cross-functional teams
  • Additional duties may vary


Education, Skills, and Abilities

  • Master of Science Degree in Chemistry, Chemical or Polymer Engineering, or an equivalent field of study; PhD degree preferred.
  • 2-5 Years of Experience
  • Broad knowledge of various polymers, polymerization methodologies, and structure-property relationship.
  • Knowledge of anionic polymerization and styrenic block copolymers (SBCs) is considered plus
  • Ability to translate customer needs into new product and application development programs
  • Ability to travel 25% of the time, submit call reports and expense reports
  • Fundamental understanding of the concepts, practices, and procedures to be used in performance of this job
  • Demonstrated ability to carry a load of multiple projects; prioritizing and executing tasks to meet deadlines while having minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated focus and performance on workplace safety
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate through verbal and written reports
  • Possess computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, and the ability to learn new software
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical, drug screen, background, and reference check
