Assistant Controller Job at University of San Diego
Serving as a key member of the financial management team, the Assistant Controller is an active participant in helping the university to meet its financial accounting objectives. This position manages the accounting office and oversees the maintenance of the university’s general ledger, exercising professional accounting judgment as necessary. The Assistant Controller plays a prominent role in the university’s internal control and technology initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for timely and accurate financial accounting of the university’s general ledger and related reconciliations thereto. Manages the operations of the accounting office to ensure financial objectives and reporting deadlines are met.
- Exercises professional accounting judgment where necessary to ensure compliance with regulatory pronouncements and generally accepted accounting principles.
- Continuously monitors department efforts to ensure maximum use of technology and best business practices. Designs, tests, and implements changes where necessary in concert with appropriate support personnel.
- Liaison for the internal audit risk assessment program. Conducts and supervises internal audits, identifying areas of internal control weakness. Researches, writes, and implements policies and procedures to strengthen control systems. Prepares internal audit reports.
- Assists Controller in the coordination of the fiscal year-end external audit and preparation of the audited financial statements. Performs periodic balance sheet reviews with staff to ensure account reconciliations remain current and accounting issues remain addressed. Ensures proper communication of accounting issues to Controller to eliminate surprises at fiscal year-end. Implements auditor recommendations to strengthen accounting controls.
- Coordinates the fiscal year-end external Single Audit. Prepares the audited financial schedules and notes related to the Single Audit. Performs periodic reviews and collaborates with pertinent campus departments to ensure accounting issues remain addressed. Ensures proper communication of accounting issues to pertinent campus departments to eliminate surprises at fiscal year-end. Implements auditor recommendations to strengthen accounting controls.
- Prepares complex financial reports, analyses, and other projects as assigned for key management and the various committees of the Board of Trustees.
- Actively participates in the progression of the university’s enterprise resource planning (ERP) software as it relates to internal account monitoring and external report development. Assists in future implementation efforts for financial systems.
- Leads projects as assigned by Controller, soliciting participation and collaboration with personnel from other departments as necessary. Exercises professional judgment in the accomplishment and resource-utilization of assigned projects.
- Provides leadership to the accounting office through goal-setting, open communication, resourcefulness, and commitment to professional development for staff members. Sets vision and goals for the department in the advancement of financial initiatives for campus constituents.

Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduate from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in accounting, finance, business administration or a closely related field, and five years of progressively responsible finance work.
- Certified Public Accountant with public accounting experience and active license or Certified Public Accountant candidate preferred.
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles as they pertain to colleges and universities.

- Demonstrate skills in both written and oral communications to effectively deal with people in conversation or correspondence.
- Ability to effectively supervise employees including, but not limited to, hiring, training, rewarding, and corrective action.
