The Strategic Communications team at UCLA's School of the Arts and Architecture brings the school's and university's mission and values to life as the school's lead storytellers, reflecting the multifaceted diversity of the school, university and surrounding communities. Under the supervision of the Executive Director of Strategic Communications, the Assistant Director plays a crucial role in developing and implementing the school's strategic communications program across a broad spectrum of activities, creating original content and managing and distributing content across multiple platforms to engage and grow target audiences, raise the visibility and enhance the reputation of the school through effective storytelling and media relations. Primary responsibilities include: content ideation and creation that involves researching and implementing story ideas that highlight impactful UCLA Arts research, projects, and other accomplishments from across the school's student, faculty, alumni, and staff community; developing and implementing a robust media relations and outreach strategy that yields increased visibility and recognition for the school; development and management of special projects across a variety of media and public programs; and logistical and administrative management for a multiplatform strategic communications program.

The successful candidate for this position must possess a passion for and working knowledge of the arts and architecture, be able to translate research and projects into clear and compelling language, develop and pitch positive, engaging narratives through news releases that will be strategically distributed to a variety of industry and more mainstream news organizations. The person in this position must be able to work effectively with academic leadership, including department chairs and faculty, staff colleagues from across the school and university, students, and alumni and others from across the community.

Required/Preferred

A minimum of 7 years of directly relevant experience in broad-based communications and full-time professional media experience.

Required

Strong knowledge of higher education and the arts.

Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

Skill in editing and proofreading copy for accuracy, style and content under deadlines.

Demonstrated record of successful national, regional and local media relations planning, implementation and placement esp. in the arts, culture and higher education sectors.

Skill with computers, digital platforms, and software (Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Social Media Platforms (e.g. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc), Google Analytics, Mailchimp, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, basic html)
