Assistant Fire Marshal Job at Salt Lake Community College
This position will assist the Campus Fire Marshal in carrying out their duties to ensure a safe and healthful work and learning environment across the College campuses and maintain College compliance with all applicable state and federal policies, laws, and standards.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
- Plan and carry out an effective fire prevention and protection program, ensure compliance with institutional policies, regulatory agency standards, state, and national guidelines as they relate to Fire and Life Safety, and provide technical training and assistance to college departments and personnel.
- Ensure that all College facilities are in compliance with current State & Federal fire codes.
- Managing and inspecting College fire alarm and suppression systems, which includes maintaining and testing all systems to ensure that they are in proper working order and overseeing all modifications and upgrades to current systems.
- Carry out inspections of College property for fire hazards, violations of fire prevention principles and adequacy of fire protection systems and equipment.
- Take remedial action to remove fire hazards.
- Report conditions and actions taken to appropriate authorities.
- Maintain and archive records of compliance and corrective action.
- Conduct campus fire drills, develop fire evacuation procedures.
- Advise departments of problems relating to fire prevention.
- Perform site visits, attend meetings, and supervise construction and maintenance activities associated with the Fire and Life Safety Systems & Program.
- Review plans and specifications for renovation and new construction projects to ensure compliance with NFPA/Federal/State codes and life safety regulations and provide written comments.
- Maintain records relating to the Fire and Life Safety Program (i.e., inspection, investigations, equipment inventory, etc.).
- Respond to fire alarms in College buildings, including after hours, holiday, and weekends.
- Investigate and report on causes of fires.
- Act as the College’s liaison with the local Fire Departments, State Fire Marshal, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) on construction, types and designs of buildings, fire prevention and similar matters relating to the Fire and Life Safety Program.
- Work with the Emergency Response Manager in the development and maintenance of emergency related plans.
- Be an active member of the Emergency Management Committee.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

Must have
one
of the following combinations of education and experience:
- High school diploma and 6 years of related full-time paid experience
- Associate Degree (60 credit hours completed) and 4 years of related full-time paid experience.
- Any combination of the above meeting the minimum requirements with trade-offs for education/experience at a 1:1 ratio.
- Part-time experience may be considered on a prorated basis.
Must also have:
- Must be Fire Inspector I Certified, or the ability to become certified within four (4) months of employment.
- Must have a valid Utah Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one.
- Background in fire alarm inspection and plan review.
- Knowledge and understanding of Federal, State, and local fire/safety regulations and codes.
- Strong human relations skills as well as verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to gather data, compile information and prepare reports.
- React calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
- Excellent people skills and be able to handle stressful situations.
- Strong computer and organizational skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people in ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
- Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
