Assistant Professor - Applied Hydrology (Water Faculty Cluster) Job at SUNY ESF
The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) in Syracuse, NY is building a faculty cluster in Water Research to complement existing expertise in this general area. The Cluster also includes new tenure-track positions in water quality modeling (Department of Environmental Resources Engineering), aquatic biochemistry (Department of Chemistry), water policy and governance (Department of Environmental Studies), and biotechnology and aquatic sciences (Department of Environmental Biology). Here we invite applications for an academic-year (10 month) tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Applied Hydrology. This position will reside in the Department of Sustainable Resources Management (SRM), and fulfill a key capacity in watershed hydrology with an expected focus in ecohydrology of temperate systems (especially forest systems in natural and built environments). Candidates with supporting strengths in physical hydrology, aquatic and riparian ecology, biogeochemistry, hydroinformatics, and/or climate science are also desired. We are especially interested in candidates with a collaborative research focus that contributes to supporting freshwater science and ecology in the Northeast and globally through substantial participation in ESF's inaugural faculty cluster in water science. We seek a teacher-scholar who will fulfill essential teaching needs, with a strong commitment to engaging students in the classroom and through research mentorship at the undergraduate, MS, and PhD levels. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in this interdisciplinary water cluster as well as build an internationally recognized and extramurally funded research program in applied hydrology. A strong interest in collaborative research with faculty in other departments within the College, is expected, within the broader mission of the College to advance knowledge and promote stewardship of both natural and designed environments.
Responsibilities: The workload for this position is 30% teaching, 60% research, and 10% service. Specific teaching responsibilities include: 1) an undergraduate course in watershed science, 2) an upper division undergraduate/graduate level laboratory course in integrated watershed science and management and 3) a graduate level seminar in the candidate's area of expertise. Service responsibilities include advising undergraduate students, mentoring graduate students at the Masters and Doctoral levels and participating in department, college and community service.

- PhD in environmental science, hydrology, forestry, natural resources management, geography, or other relevant field
- Strong record of publication in peer-review journals related to physical hydrology, ecohydrology aquatic ecology, biogeochemistry, geosciences, environmental management, and/or related topics
- Evidence of potential to secure external funding to support research
Preferred Qualifications:
- One or more years of postdoctoral experience and a proven track record in applied hydrology
- Evidence of effective teaching and mentoring
- Evidence of strong lab research experience with some field research experience
- Evidence of collegiality and dedication to professional service
- Demonstrated ability to communicate science effectively to multiple constituencies
- Demonstrated experience fostering an inclusive environment, working with people from diverse backgrounds, and incorporating diverse perspectives in research
Starting Salary: Commensurate with experience.

The College and the Faculty: The successful candidate will join the Department of Sustainable Resources Management (https://www.esf.edu/fnrm/). The department has over 25 faculty, 110 graduate students, and 510 undergraduates. It offers undergraduate degree programs in: construction management, forests ecosystem science, forest resources management, natural resources management, and sustainable energy management. ESF's more than 25,000 acres of forest properties include the Adirondack Ecological Center (https://www.esf.edu/aec/) which serves as a basecamp for teaching and research in a near-pristine 15,000 acre portion of the Adirondacks. The department is home to the Tropical timber information center, the Climate & Applied Forest Research Institute, the willow project, and a new faculty cluster hire in Bioeconomy, climate and renewable energy. SRM faculty also interact with the centers on campus including the American Chestnut Research and Restoration Center, the Center for Integrated Teaching and Research (CIRTAS), the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment, the Restoration Science Center, and multiple field stations.
ESF has an especially strong focus in aquatic sciences with more than 50 faculty on campus focused on environmental problems involving water. In the past decade alone, ESF has made major investments in new laboratories e.g. Center for Integrated Teaching and Research in Aquatic Sciences, the forest soils laboratory, and the mass spectroscopy complex in A&TS. These facilities bring outstanding capabilities to ESF allowing for the recruitment of new high quality faculty. Existing faculty in Chemical Engineering and ERE are working on new technologies for remediation of water quality problems such as harmful algal blooms and PFAS contamination. The Clarkson-ESF Center of Excellence in Healthy Waters will interface those efforts with private enterprise. This position includes opportunities to collaborate with and expand upon those efforts.
