POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Department of Music at Adams State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track

appointment in Applied Woodwinds (open to specialty in any woodwind instrument) and Music Education

at the rank of Assistant Professor. The person appointed to this position will teach applied lessons and

performance courses in the woodwind area, teach Woodwind, Elementary, and Secondary Music Methods,

and serve as the primary liaison for all music education matters, including collaborating with the School of

Education. Opportunities for supplemental online teaching in the Master of Arts in Music Education

program may be available. Other teaching areas may be assigned depending upon the qualifications of the

candidate and departmental needs. Effective teaching, scholarship and creative activity, and service to the

University are required for retention, promotion, and tenure. This is an academic year appointment with a

course load of 12 credits per semester.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Terminal degree in music. ABD considered. A minimum of a Master’s degree in Music Education

preferred.

Ability to teach at all levels in the applied woodwind instrumental area.

Public school teaching experience. Candidates should be well versed in current music education

methodologies and practices.

Ability and willingness to successfully recruit for the department and to work with high school

students and directors.

students of diverse sociocultural identities.

Salary

Salary is $45,500 to $47,000 for the first year (12-month, full-time contract); excellent medical/dental and

retirement benefits. Opportunities for supplemental pay in the Master of Arts in Music Education program

ABOUT ADAMS STATE UNIVERSITY AND THE DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC:
Located in the beautiful San Luis Valley between the Sangre de Cristo and San Juan Mountain ranges in

Alamosa, Colorado, Adams State University is a state-supported Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI; 37%

Hispanic, 8% Black). The San Luis Valley is the largest alpine valley in the United States at an elevation of

The Adams State University Department of Music, within the School of Visual and Performing Arts, is a

vibrant and innovative music program with recently renovated facilities, including the Music Building,

Richardson Hall Auditorium and Leon Memorial Recital Hall. The department houses a state-of-the-art

recording studio and enhanced computer lab, is an 80% Steinway school and has a high job placement rate

for its music education graduates. In 2016, the music department implemented the ETHOS: Exploring

Equity through Music initiative, which is our commitment to addressing equity, diversity and societal issues

through inclusive programming of our ensembles and the development of new curricula that is reflective of

our outstanding student body. We also have created a series of student-led chamber ensembles that

empower students to develop the artistic, managerial, and leadership skills that will be essential to their

careers, while providing outreach to the community and K-12 schools.

The Department of Music, as well as the Departments of Art and Theatre, take a leading role in cultivating

the arts in the San Luis Valley.
