Position Summary Information

Minimum Qualifications
  • Terminal or Master’s degree in College Student Personnel/Development, Higher Education, or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum of seven years of experience working in a higher education setting.

License/Certification Required

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in designing and implementing student success initiatives.
  • Evidence of progressively responsible administrative experience including supervision, budget management, proposal writing, and leading campus-wide initiatives.
  • Outstanding writing, oral communication, and interpersonal skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Assistant Vice Provost provides leadership, advocacy, coordination, and recommendations for academic and non-academic initiatives that support student success at Appalachian State University. The Assistant Vice Provost supports collaborations with departments, schools, and colleges across campus.
The responsibilities of the Assistant Vice Provost include, but are not limited to:
  • Providing leadership to direct reports to assure that these programs and centers are providing high-quality support to relevant student populations.
  • Assessing activities undertaken to improve student retention, persistence, and graduation. Supporting and improving successful initiatives and discontinuing initiatives that are not effective.
  • Collaborating broadly to promote student success across all undergraduate colleges.
  • Envisioning, planning, and seeking funding for future student success initiatives and programs.
  • Forging partnerships with key academic units so that the office can undertake the work necessary to support student success.
  • Collecting and interpreting data that recognizes the cultural and socio-economic differences among learners to demonstrate areas of needed support for advising and student success.
  • Staying abreast of and disseminating state or national legislation, literature, and best practices pertaining to persistence, retention, and graduation.
  • Presenting data and solutions to campus partners in order to establish new initiatives to support student success.
  • Participating in professional development related to student success.
