JOB SUMMARY AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: This position is responsible for providing peer mentoring services to impacted persons/families through the Hospital Violence Intervention Program. The Assistant Violence Intervention Liaison will conduct hospital and home visits and work collaboratively with the Violence Intervention Liaison in making referrals to other community and faith-based agencies and resources.

1. Provides intervention based peer mentoring, counseling and advocacy to at risk youth/young adults (and their families) hospitalized as a result of gunshot wounds(GSW), knife stab wounds(KSW) and some forms of assault(vehicular and aggravated) and relates to the needs of the diverse ethnic, cultural, educational and socioeconomic backgrounds.
2. Provides intensive case management including home and institutional contacts with violently traumatized victims during their hospitalization or emergency room visit. Assist in securing social services, education and job-related opportunities by assessing needs and providing information about services. Form positive relationships and maintain in-patient and out-patient contact with clients of the Hospital Violence Intervention Program (HVIP).
3. Works effectively with at risk, gang-affiliated populations and network effectively with various types of organizations (for profit and non-profit), agencies, and hospital staff and physicians.
4. Works with hospital staff (social workers, patient advocates, etc.) to ensure victims of violence have access to appropriate support services;
5. Researches root origins of random acts of violence to assist in mediating situations and prevention retaliation between individuals and groups (e.g., working with community leaders, other outreach programs to gain information that may be helpful in preventing additional acts of gun violence.
6. Works to actively intervene in circumstances in which violence may occur, including but not limited to possible retaliation and/or other acts of violence by coordinating with community partners to identify high risk areas for violence.
7. Coordinates activities, establish peer mentoring group(s), prioritize tasks and work independently in the absence of direct supervision
8. Confers with Violence Intervention Liaison and/or appropriate hospital staff regarding information sharing to abide by HIPAA and hospital confidentiality guidelines.
9. Participates in violence prevention efforts with other providers as assigned.
10. Reviews trauma log and network system(s) daily to obtain potential client information.
11. Completes all screening assessments for potential clients.
12. Assists in obtaining data, data entry, charting and graphing for HVIP clients for research and data collection purposes.
13. Works with Violence Intervention Liaison to assist active clients in identifying and developing service plans
14. Assists, as appropriate and necessary, in reevaluating and redefining active client and programmatic goals
15. Works flexible shifts to include nights, weekends and holidays as needed
16. Other job duties as assigned

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION: High School Graduate or GED required. Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Combination of education and/or work experience will be considered.

EXPERIENCE: Successful applicant must be qualified by education, training or experience to work with at risk youth/young adults. Bilingual applicant preferred. Successful applicant must be available to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends and holidays.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION: Valid Tennessee Driver’s License and access to an operable motor vehicle.

  • Demonstrated commitment to working with at risk youth and young adults.
  • Knowledge of issues that negatively impact urban youth (i.e., lack of education and adequate/appropriate housing, financial responsibilities, early parenthood, poor role models) that may lead to youth violence.
  • Must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to accept constructive criticism and take initiative to self-correct
  • Ability to accept and follow through on instructions, directions and guidance from superiors
  • Ability to work with diverse populations
  • Knowledge of acceptable and expected work standards and ethics
  • Ability to organize, meet deadlines and follow through on commitments
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule (may include evenings and/or weekends).

Location: Regional One Health · HVIP
Schedule: Part-time, Night shift w/rotation, 9:00pm-7:00am
