What you will do:
Assist the behavioral health team by serving offenders at Mike Durfee State Prison. Services may include but are not limited to:

  • gathering information from individuals regarding their behavioral health concerns;
  • facilitating groups;
  • development and implementation of treatment plans;
  • collaborative work with other corrections professionals;
  • assistance with release planning to determine mental health services upon release from the correctional setting to facilitate continuity of care.

This position will include some evening and weekend work, on-call duties, and infrequent travel.

Mike Durfee State Prison is a National Health Services Corps (NHSC) approved site which can provide opportunities for student loan reimbursement.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • experience in the delivery of clinical services;
  • experience with justice involved clients;
  • experience with a wide range of mental health functioning.

Education:
Bachelor level degree in psychology, social work, chemical dependency, or a human services related field is preferred.

Knowledge of:

  • the complex needs and/or dual diagnoses possible within the corrections-involved population;
  • theories and techniques used in counseling, crisis intervention, and chemical dependency issues;
  • evidence-based practices related to the rehabilitation of criminal offenders;
  • attitude, problems, and behavior of incarcerated individuals;
  • treatment planning, charting, and report writing;
  • suicide prevention and intervention specifically related to the correctional population.

Skill to:

  • effectively communicate with and motivate treatment resistant offenders;
  • gather information for clinical interviews, assessments, and evaluations;
  • teach concepts and coping skills to offenders with varying degrees of cognitive ability.

Ability to:

  • deal effectively with offenders from diverse ethnic and sociological backgrounds;
  • be a positive role model;
  • work collaboratively and communicate quickly and accurately with multi-disciplinary staff;
  • receive oral communications from clients and relate that information accurately to others;
  • facilitate group sessions;
  • make proper responses to safety and security problems;
  • adhere to the security demands of a correctional facility.

This position is eligible for Veterans’ Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
