The Structural Materials (SM) Division at the University of Dayton Research (UDRI) Institute is seeking a highly motivated Research Engineer to support test programs that produce mechanical property data for mechanical characterization, structural integrity evaluation, and life prediction methodology. Position is within the Advanced Materials Characterization Group. Location is at WPAFB. Roles and responsibilities include assisting with equipment configuration necessary to support test programs, participate in project planning, execute plans as a test operator, work closely with technical staff in all facets of operating and maintaining a mechanical testing facility. This position principally supports laboratory operations and will incur periodic activities that are dirty and oily.
- BS in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or Physics from a nationally accredited university.
- Possesses good problem solving, organizational, communication, and record keeping skills.
- Ability to analyze and solve problems within assigned area with limited guidance from senior personnel.
- Experience working well with others in a diverse team environment.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Experience reading and writing technical documentation (including schematics) and progress reports.
- Experience using basic mechanical power and hand tools.
- Capable of periodic lifting up to 50 lbs.
- US citizen able to obtain basic security clearances.
An R2 must meet all R1 minimum qualifications in addition to the qualifications listed below:
- A minimum of three years of directly related experience with advanced mechanical testing.
While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:
- Basic understanding of advanced mechanical testing protocols and material properties.
- Experience using laboratory tools, test equipment, and machine shop manufacturing processes.
- Experience with electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic equipment troubleshooting diagnostics and repair.
- Experience with SolidWorks or similar drawing software capable of developing mechanical drawings for use and knowledge documentation.
- Classroom or application experience using Python, Mathematica, C, MatLab, or similar programs.
- Ability to be self-taught and perform topic research supporting new requirements.
