POSITION DESCRIPTION
LAB is seeking an Associate Teacher to support students one-on-one and in small groups. This position provides a unique opportunity for talented individuals with limited or no experience in education to explore the field of education and to gain hands-on practice on supporting the mission critical work of teachers. Associate Teachers will have an opportunity to observe best practices in classroom instruction and education reform from experienced teachers and school leaders at a leading charter management organization. Associate Teachers will support teachers with tutoring, grading, data analysis, and administrative support.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Your primary responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
- Assist teachers with instruction, assessments, grading, and other classroom responsibilities.
- Potentially teach small groups of students.
- Support students by providing one-on-one and small group tutoring daily, and small group intervention and student support.
- Observe Master Teachers in order to improve instructional techniques and classroom management.
- Provide administrative support including but not limited to copies, hallway duty, organizing classroom materials, etc.
- Demonstrate effective and appropriate interpersonal relationships with scholars, educational staff, parents and staff.
- Respect the confidentiality of information regarding scholars and be discreet in dealing with parents and educational personnel.
- Resolve any low-level technical issues that may impede scholars’ learning.
- Participate in grade-level activities, and school-wide functions, events, and trips.
- Provide consistent rewards and/or consequences for student behavior.
- Supervise students during transitions, breakfast, lunch and after school.
- Participate in annual staff orientation and training.
- Other duties as assigned.
ABOUT THE DESIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING & MINDSET:
- A BA/BS degree, in an applicable subject;
- High GPA in an academic major preferred
- 1-3 years minimum of experience working with children in diverse and urban areas preferred
- Commitment to LAB’s mission and academic objectives: that all students, regardless of background and incoming ability, can achieve at high levels
- Demonstrated belief in a structured, predictable and safe environment for children
- Willingness to build relationships with students, families and other school members
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
- Willingness to absorb feedback and engage in self-improvement; ability to reflect and adjust
COMPENSATION
Salary range: $45,000-$55,000, commensurate with experience and expertise.
In addition to competitive salaries, LAB benefits package includes:
- 80% cost share of health, dental, vision employee plan premiums
- 5% of annualized base salary contribution to a LAB retirement plan which vests at a percentage annually
- An employee professional development allowance for improving the employee’s practice

Brooklyn Laboratory Charter Schools (LAB) is a network of open enrollment, college-prep, public charter schools that opened its first middle school in downtown Brooklyn in 2014. LAB opened its second middle school in the fall of 2016, and will open its first two high schools in the fall of 2017, both in downtown Brooklyn. LAB is dedicated to serving the highest need students regardless of their academic level, English language proficiency, or disability.
