The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is responsible for managing and protecting the state’s renewable natural resources, including all wildlife and aquatic life.
The incumbent of this position is responsible for promoting the statewide BearWise initiative within the Large Carnivore Program. The position provides presentations and outreach to individuals, government entities, civic organizations, schools and the public at large on how to mitigate or avoid human and agricultural conflict with bears. The position requires regular travel, public speaking, strong self-initiative and a desire to work to improve the acceptance of bears in Louisiana. This position will assist landowners, hunters, producers, and residents with bear conflict mitigation and resolution, as well as other bear program activities as needed. This position works with other state, federal, local governments, and NGO’s. This position plays an important role in shaping the future of bear management in the state. This position takes an active role in not only bear but also in large carnivore research. This position serves as a mentor to biologists and field technicians. The incumbent of this position is required hold and maintain a current CDS (controlled and dangerous substance) license with The Louisiana Board of Pharmacy as well as the DEA, may be obtained after initial employment.

SUPPLEMENTAL QUALIFICATIONS: Four years of professional level experience within any of the following: Wildlife management; Black bear or cougar habitat conservation and/or related permitting review and regulation and mitigation. Proficient with dart projectors and administering drugs to bears, deer, large carnivores, etc.

Current permanent status classified state employees may be required to accept a Probational appointment if selected.

This position will be domiciled in either Ouachita, Rapides or Lafayette Parishes.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A baccalaureate degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries management, animal science, forestry, natural resources, or conservation followed by four years of professional experience in wildlife or fisheries research, management or conservation; forestry; or in environmental science.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
Graduate training in qualifying fields may be substituted for up to one year of the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience.
A non-thesis master's degree in qualifying fields will substitute for one year of the required experience.
A master's degree with completed thesis in qualifying fields will substitute for two years of the required experience.
A Ph.D. in qualifying fields will substitute for two years of the required experience.
NOTE:
Examples of non-qualifying degrees are science education (of any discipline), geology, geography, nuclear science and agribusiness.
