POSITION OBJECTIVE

The objective of the position is to provide data management, statistical design and analysis support to cancer-related epidemiological and health services projects using population-based databases. The analyst will play a leadership role in all aspects of data analyses, data management and report generation for these research projects. The analyst will be integrally involved in all aspects of research project design, quality assurance monitoring, preparation of research reports and grant applications within the School of Medicine, in other parts of the university, as well as with partner institutions (e.g., University Hospitals, Cleveland Clinic, VA, and Metro Health). This position functions under minimal supervision. Data sources will include but are not limited to novel prospective data collection efforts; EMR data mining; cancer registry data (OCISS and SEER); U.S. Census data; CDC vital statistics and other social determinants of health datasets. The analyst will be integrally involved in statistical design and planning for all research; quality control and assurance (QA/QC) monitoring; and preparation of statistical summaries, including research reports. Experience in multivariable modeling techniques, and familiarity with statistical software such as SAS and/or R is essential.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Study Design – Work with the Principal Investigator and with other investigators on the projects to develop appropriate methodologies for addressing study hypotheses, using population-based databases. Participate in the research design phase of projects and in the preparation of research proposals for funding. This work will be comprehensive and will include developing approaches for data management, assuring the integrity of the data, and methods for implementing data analysis. (10%)
  • Data Analysis – Consult with clinical investigators and other statisticians on the team to determine appropriate statistical approaches. Independently perform statistical programming and analysis for multiple research studies. Create analytic datasets, summarize data, and create reports. Work with other team members to develop and implement analytic approaches including but not limited to graphical analyses of data, multiple linear regression, logistic regression, methods for correlated data, and survival analysis. Objectively assess appropriateness of final models using model diagnostics of final statistical models. Document methods and results via written memoranda and reports. (25%)
  • Data Procurement and Management – Work with other clinical and programming personnel to design, develop, generate and maintain appropriate databases, using SAS and/or R. Develop programs and protocols to ensure data integrity (e.g., logic and range checks; QA/QC). Perform intermediate statistical programming for quality assurance. Develop efficient data archival systems for use and maintains detailed written documentation of all data programming and data archival systems. Prepare documentation for all the steps involved in preparing an analytic program file, including creation of code and datasets with detailed annotation and data dictionaries, to be organized and catalogued for later use by the investigators. (25%)
  • Prepare Research Reports – Assist in the writing and preparation of research papers, grant proposals, including internal documentation, presentations, and other tasks, as needed. (10%)
  • Development of Educational Opportunities – Work with other personnel to develop workshops and written materials to assist medical and graduate students and post-docs to learn about methodological and programming issues involved in working with population-based data, with emphasis on data management and reporting. (10%)
  • Provide consultation for medical and graduate students working on large database projects in the areas of study design and data analysis, as well as provide instruction to other team members on techniques in which they have expertise. (10%)

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 3 years of work experience in an increasingly responsible position in biomedical research or social science research environment housed in a university, nonprofit research organization or similar setting.

Education: A Master's degree in epidemiology, health services research, or biostatistics or related degree is required.


REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Close familiarity and ability to work with population-based, public use databases related to public health.
  • Statistical skills for analysis of multivariable data and production of graphical summaries.
  • Statistical skills for data analysis, including analysis of longitudinal data.
  • Statistical programming skills using SAS and/or R, including data visualization skills.
  • Ability to learn new technologies quickly and without formal training, and use of new software or high-level coding languages, such as ArcGIS or Python.
  • Ability to work semi-independently with direct but limited guidance.
  • Being flexible, demonstrating initiative, strong planning/organizational/problem-solving skills, and fostering teamwork.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, flexibility and the ability to interact with a diverse and large research team (statisticians, investigators, clinicians, and programmers).
  • Desirable skills include background/understanding of medical terminology, and clinical/translational research.
  • Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and demonstrate consistent attendance.
  • Ability to use Microsoft office suite products such as Word, Power Point, Excel and Access.
  • Interest in and/or knowledge of cancer research and health disparities is highly desirable.
  • Ability to conduct analysis in a HIPAA-compliant manner and maintain human subjects research training certifications.


WORKING CONDITIONS

General office environment. Work requires regular use of a computer keyboard and mouse. Limited manual dexterity required. Work requires negligible physical exertion. No exposure to hazards.
Employee will be expected to obtain and maintain certification of training in human subjects research through an online course and exam and other seminars. The position may require occasional work with investigators at the Cleveland Clinic and/or MetroHealth Medical Center, and might require occasional travel to either of these locations. No travel outside the Cleveland area is anticipated. This position may be eligible for the staff hybrid work program pending approval.
