Under general supervision of the Building Maintenance/Custodial Crew Leader, the Building Custodian performs a range of responsible custodial duties related to the care and cleaning of the City of Bastrop’s buildings. As a member of the Custodial team, coordinates work to keep buildings clean and orderly by performing duties including but not limited to vacuuming, sweeping and/or mopping floors, cleaning windows, glass, and mirrors, and removing trash. Employees in this class exercise appropriate safety precautions and follow all safety policies and procedures in handling chemical agents to ensure personal, public, and personnel safety. Performs related work as required.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Primary Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Cleans floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing and or vacuuming.• Cleans windows, glass partitions or mirrors using proper cleaners, sponges or squeegees.• Uses cleaning compounds in containers according to specifications.• Follows procedures for using chemicals and cleaners safely and productively according to instructions to ensure personal, public, and personnel safety.• Follows procedures for using power equipment to clean and prevent damage to floors and fixtures.• Cleans and disinfects office areas and public meeting rooms.• Cleans and sanitizes restrooms and kitchen facilities, including fixtures, sinks, mirrors, urinals and toilets.• Gathers and empties trash, re-lining and disinfecting trash containers.• Dusts windows, window blinds, fans, walls and office furniture as needed.• Moves furniture and other equipment, as needed, in the performance of duties.• Cleans equipment and tools after use and maintains cleanliness and order in storage areas.• Performs routine maintenance on facility custodial materials and equipment, (i.e., changing vacuum cleaner belts and bags, and changing mop heads).• Notifies Building Custodial Crew Leader of needed supplies and reports facility maintenance needs upon detection.• Communicates effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and others (internally and externally) in order to provide, exchange, or verify information, answer inquiries, address issues, or resolve and/or report problems or complaints.Marginal Duties and Responsibilities: • Performs non-cleaning tasks in general facility maintenance, i.e., restocking supply closet, filling paper and soap dispensers.• Follows City and Department policies and procedures and supervisor’s instructions.• Uses good judgement and makes good decisions in matters related to the job.• Assists others on the Custodial Team; is helpful, cooperative, courteous and demonstrates a good attitude in all dealings with the public, co-workers and others.• Reports in a timely manner all issues, concerns and questions to immediate supervisor or others as appropriate in the chain of command.• Discusses matters affecting the job or performance with the supervisor.• Demonstrates initiative and diligence in the prompt and proper completion of all job duties, whether or not listed in the Job Description.• Safeguards City property and recognizes and reports needed repairs.• Works safely, follows safety rules and training, and maintains a safe and clean work environment.• Maintains confidentiality with regard to all City business.• Be punctual on a regular basis.• Performs related work as directed.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSRegular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential, Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.Must be available to work holidays, weekends, night callouts, or after hours for special events, meetings, or during emergency situations as required. Required to remain available for immediate call-in due to any natural or man-made disaster, as directed by the City Manager.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requirements: Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend standard English.Any equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.Licenses and Certificates: Valid Texas driver license to be maintained throughout employment with an acceptable driving record.Other Required Qualifications: • Must successfully pass pre-employment background check, physical exam and drug screening.• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities(Note: Custodian must possess the following qualifications and abilities with or without reasonable accommodation.)Good working knowledge of all phases of custodial work, including but not limited to vacuuming, sweeping, dusting, mopping, sanitizing.Working knowledge of appropriate safety measures and precautions to exercise in handling chemical cleaning agents.Ability to read and comprehend standard English in order to follow instructions on the containers of cleaning agents, including the ability to mix portions according to instructions.Ability to follow instructions and operate common cleaning equipment including but not limited to a broom, mop, and vacuum cleaner.Ability to effectively communicate with City personnel with whom position interacts.Ability to effectively manage time required to accomplish multiple tasks.Must be able to work as part of team, but independently, with limited supervision. Have a service orientation, i.e., actively look for ways to help the public and co-workers.Ability to recognize a problem, i.e., tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.Ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce logical solutions. Ability to establish positive working relationships with City personnel with whom position interacts.Good judgement and the ability to solve problems and assist co-workers and others with solutions to problems.Good interpersonal skills and the ability to get along well with the public, co-workers, and others.Ability to work occasional overtime and attend meetings as needed and be flexible so as to handle other assignments by supervisors.Ability to work independently.
