The County of Yolo is recruiting to fill one (1) regular, full-time position in the class of Building Inspector I at the Department of Community Services.

The Position
This position requires a standard Monday-Friday work schedule and shift. The ideal candidate for this position should be highly motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision. Incumbents should be proficient in detailed report writing.

Under general supervision, receives on-the-job training in the techniques of inspecting buildings and structures in all stages of construction, alteration, and repair; learns enforcement of building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical codes and planning and zoning regulations.
This is the entry-level trainee class in the Building Inspection series. Incumbents learn to apply specific code and technical construction knowledge to combine inspection tasks in the following areas: building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, housing, safety, HVAC systems, refrigeration, grading, mobile home parks, and related areas. Training emphasis is also placed on the ability to develop effective public relations with builders, contractors, and the public in conducting daily work assignments.

Essential Functions

The following duties are typical of those performed by the incumbent in this classification; however, other duties may also be required.


  • Learns to review plans and specifications for compliance to relevant codes, ordinances and regulations;
  • Assists in making regular, periodic field inspections of soil conditions, building construction, plumbing, sanitary, mechanical, and electrical installations in residential commercial, industrial, or public buildings and in recreational parks to ensure compliance with all state and county codes, ordinances, and regulations;
  • Learns to check quality of materials and methods of construction;
  • Learns to check for compliance with safety regulations;
  • Learns to give field approval to proposed plan changes where code compliance is involved;
  • Trained to conduct final inspection of completed projects to give final approval to acceptable buildings and installations;
  • Trained to advise builders of non-compliance and make specific recommendations for improvements to meet standards;
  • Learns to issue correction or stop-work notices in cases of non-compliance;
  • Learns to give information and advice on construction methods and new code regulations or changes;
  • Keep records, write reports; and
  • Learns to enforce planning and zoning regulations; and performs other related duties as required.

  • Collects fees and issues permits for approved building projects.

Employment Standards

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Some college coursework and/or specialized training in building technology, architecture, engineering, or a related field is desirable.
Experience: Three (3) years of building inspection or journey-level experience in any of the trades or professions directly associated with the structural aspects of building construction: carpentry, structural, electrical or plumbing.
Licenses and Certificates: Possession and maintenance of a valid California Driver's license. Possession and maintenance of certification from the International Code Council (I.C.C. or I.C.B.O.) as a Residential Combination Inspector may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Certification as a I.C.C. or I.C.B.O. Commercial Building Inspector is required within one (1) year from the date of employment.
Positions in this classification require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license, Class C or higher, to carry out job related duties. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical or mental disability may request a reasonable accommodation.
