BUILDING MAINTENANCE LABORER (TEMPORARY)
LOCATION: Varies - Oakland, Dublin or San Leandro
DEFINITION
Under close supervision, to perform a variety of entry-level maintenance and minor construction tasks on buildings and grounds; to assist building trades personnel in the upkeep of County buildings and equipment; and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES
These positions are located in the Building Maintenance Department of the General Services Agency. Incumbents in this classification perform entry-level maintenance work. They assist in maintenance and routine installation of County structures and may be called upon to do minor building equipment and repair. Incumbents frequently assist Stationary Engineers, Electricians, Plumbers, Carpenters, Painters or other building trades personnel doing general maintenance.
This class is distinguished from the Building Equipment Maintenance Worker, in that the latter performs semi-skilled maintenance and repair work on more technical equipment in County buildings and from the Building Maintenance Worker I, in that the latter performs semi-skilled remodeling and maintenance tasks on County buildings.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Assist higher-level building trades employees in general repairs or building maintenance.
2. Construct shelves, road signs, simple cabinets and perform rough carpentry work as directed.
3. Reconstruct damaged walls and ceilings by removing old partitions and plaster; install iron studding.
4. Assist a journey-level painter in preparing furniture and building surfaces for refinishing or repainting; paint or varnish walls, floors, and trim; help move or erect scaffolding.
5. Make repairs to roofs, windows, screens, venetian blinds, doors and stairwells; replace and install towel racks, bulletin boards, broom racks and related fixtures; replaces linoleum, acoustical and floor tile.
6. Assist in the repair of leaky faucets, ruptured pipes, flush valves and toilets; replace pipe lagging and install underground sprinkler systems, sewer lines and related equipment.
7. Perform minor electrical and mechanical repairs on a variety of buildings and building equipment.
8. Assist Stationary Engineers assigned to general and emergency maintenance on building equipment, including boilers, pumps, motors, electrical circuits, refrigeration, air conditioning, heating and plumbing systems.
9. Occasionally drive a truck or other equipment in performance of regular duties; and may perform such janitorial services as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
The equivalent of one year of recent, full-time paid experience making a variety of minor repairs to buildings.
License:
Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
Special Requirement:
Employees are required to obtain and maintain an Alameda County Sheriff’s Office security clearance.
Physical Characteristics:
May require heavy lifting, working from ladders or scaffolding, and working in confined areas.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.
Knowledge of:
- Common tools, materials, equipment and methods used in carpentry, roofing, electrical, plumbing, painting and masonry trades.
Ability to:
- Use a variety of basic hand tools; e.g., wrenches, screwdrivers, drills, grinders and other machine shop equipment.
- Assist in performing work in a wide variety of maintenance and construction trades.
- Follow general and detailed verbal and written instructions.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relations with employees and the general public.
