State Title: Bus Aide
JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB GOAL:
Provides assistance (e.g., safety getting on and off the bus) to students riding ESE buses and helps the school bus operator maintain a safe and orderly ride for these students on their trip from home to school and return, while attending to any special requirements outlined in students’ IEP’s.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or GED preferred, or agreement to participate in a District sponsored GED preparation.
- A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
- Must pass required physical examination and meet established personnel requirements.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of school bus operational procedures and level of student discipline and conduct required. Ability to recognize safely hazards and take the necessary precautionary steps. Knowledge of laws governing the supervision of school students. Ability to maintain order with groups of exceptional students. Ability to understand and pass on verbal instructions. Ability to lift and remove students from the school bus in an emergency. Possess good interpersonal skills and have the ability to get along with various personalities in a large department and system.
REPORTS TO:
Assigned Supervisor
SUPERVISES:
Limited to maintaining the order and safety of the students on the school bus.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists the school bus driver in maintaining discipline by assigning students to seats, instructing in safe and proper methods of boarding, and sees that the driver’s instructions are complied with.
- Assists the driver in handling problems related to student conduct.
- Assists the driver in making referrals to the principals, either verbally or in writing.
- Performs related work as required.
- Ability to communicate effectively with school personnel, the public and students.
- Ability to prepare reports and correspondence as required.
- Knowledge of the process and procedures of the Transportation Department regarding paid time.
- Ability to perform basic math calculation and knowledge of office practice and procedures.
- Ability to distinguish the significant from the less significant when dealing with the behavior of the students on the bus.
- Ability to communicate with parents when problems arise.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to pass the required School Board physical. Ability to climb stairs, walk distances required, lift student weight up to 40 lbs. Ability to evacuate all students from the school bus in the event of an emergency.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
