We are hiring an entry-level Cashier to work as part of a team to process payments and make deposits. This position works in-person in our offices in downtown Madison near a variety of restaurants and shops, with easy access to bike paths and public transit.

The currently available position works in the Unemployment Insurance (UI) Division's Bureau of Tax and Accounting. This recruitment may also be used to fill future similar permanent, project, and/or LTE vacancies.

Position Summary
As a member of the General Accounting Unit in the Bureau of Tax and Accounting, this position acts as the Financial Specialist – Accounts Receivable in receiving, controlling, and depositing different types of funds to the Unemployment Insurance (UI) contribution and benefit accounts. The Financial Specialist – Accounts Receivable performs data entry, deposits all UI tax and benefit payments into the UI Trust Fund, and identifies any discrepancies for payment batches. This position performs basic payment batch reconciliations, updates the transfer control log in the spreadsheets, and helps accountants prepare federal UI reports.
The Accounts Receivable team processes payments that are delivered Monday-Friday at 7:30am, and must prepare all deposits for that day before 4pm. The scheduled hours of this position will cover these core business hours. This position involves occasionally working under pressure to get deposits prepared before the daily deadline.

Salary Information

A 12-month probationary period will be required. The classification title for this position is Financial Specialist (schedule 02, range 11). This position is not represented in a collective bargaining unit.
Pay will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan in effect at the time of appointment. Starting pay may vary for current state employees.
Job Details

Qualifications

You will need to have experience in:
- Using a spreadsheet, database or automated financial system (e.g. entering data; performing calculations; generating reports; or similar)
- Customer service (e.g. answering questions; providing information; explaining procedures; or similar)
- Skilled in 10-key number entry and calculations
- Experience communicating as part of a team to cover tasks
It would be nice to have training and/or experience in any of the following:
- Cash handling (e.g. ensuring proper check completion; preparing deposits; security/tracking receipts; applying standards for cash management; accounts receivable; or similar)
- Accounting or bookkeeping practices
- Identifying and correcting errors in financial transactions
- Banking or financial services
