Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE) is seeking a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) to work as a project team member performing field inspections of new fillet and groove welds installed at a repair/rehabilitation construction project. This assignment will be on-site in the Washington D.C. area and is expected to last approximately two months with an anticipated start date of November 14, 2022, and an anticipated end date of January 20, 2023. Working hours are typically 7 AM to 7 PM Monday through Saturday but may include shifts (7 PM to 7 AM) depending on the construction schedule.
While on-site, the CWI will be the primary representative of WJE and will be responsible for performing weld inspections and preparing inspection reports to be submitted to the WJE Project Manager. This position works under the supervision of a WJE project manager, project associate, and senior specialist but routinely completes field assignments independently. The CWI will work alongside other quality assurance/quality control representatives from various project stakeholders.
Responsibilities:

  • Visually inspect welded connections according to AWS D1.1.
  • Perform Magnetic Particle Inspection of welded connections according to ASTM E709 under the supervision of WJE’s ASNT NDT Level III – Magnetic Particle Testing Specialist.
  • Coordinate fieldwork with WJE Project Manager, other inspectors within the project team, and the general contractor and its sub-contractors.
  • Coordinate inspection findings with other inspectors within the project team.
  • Assist in developing inspection forms and inspection procedures.
  • Record data on inspection forms and submit them after each shift.
  • Compile neat and organized field notes.
  • Manage his/her time effectively by planning and executing inspections as tasks become available.
  • Communicate workload constraints to the WJE Project Manager.
  • Provide desktop-based support by assisting with reviewing RFIs, organizing inspection reports, and tracking construction/inspection progress.
  • Be attentive and vigilant while contractors and third parties perform project site work.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma plus one year of relevant hands-on experience with welded connections or an associate or bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Registration as American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Weld Inspector, Senior Certified Weld Inspector, or equivalent per AWS
  • Registration as ASNT NDT Level II (or III) – Magnetic Particle Testing
  • Detail and team-oriented with effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to read and interpret structural, steel shop, and architectural drawings
  • Safely operate and work from ladders, scissor lifts, and other personnel lifts
  • Ability to work independently and to perform tasks after verbal and written instruction and 12-hour days
  • Ability to obtain OSHA-10 and OSHA-30 General Industry certification

This position requires visual acuity and listening ability. Individuals must have the dexterity to be able to operate office and field equipment such as computers, printers, fax, copier, telephone, voice mail system, and other office and field equipment. Requirements may also include:

  • Ability to attend meetings at various office, field, and construction sites
  • Ability to perform inspections of buildings and other structures, both visually and with instruments
  • Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to perform work in the temperature extremes presented by work in the outdoors
  • Ability to read construction drawings, diagrams, printed materials, and computer screens
  • Ability to record data clearly and write passages for reports, letters, etc.
  • Ability to travel
  • Ability to safely work at heights
  • Ability to safely use and/or operate ladders, scaffolds, lifts, and other access equipment
  • Ability to understand and appreciate safety training specific to numerous workplace and construction hazards
  • Ability to safely work in a variety of occupationally hazardous locations
  • Medically fit to utilize respiratory protection devices and other forms of Personal Protective Equipment
  • Ability to drive and safely operate a motor vehicle
