Water Treatment Plant and/or Chemical Operator

NJDWSC has an immediate opening at our offices in Wanaque, NJ, for a Water Treatment Plant and/or Chemical Operator to join the Operations department. As a member of our team, you will contribute to the continued reliable delivery of the highest-quality potable water to Northern New Jersey.

Treatment Plant Operator Essential Functions:

Under general supervision, this position monitors, operates and controls treatment plant processes through a centralized computer system, including monitoring of all set points and computer adjustments, changes in equipment process and treatment including chemical additions, plant flows, plant levels, low lift pump control and filter operations. Monitors data in the distribution system and makes chemical dosage changes accordingly. This position analyzes and records the color, turbidity, pH, chlorine residual and manganese of all treatment process to meet required standards. Monitor dewatering of water treatment residuals and related facets of the Commissions Residual Treatment Facility. Will perform related work as required.

Chemical Operator Essential Functions:

Under general supervision, this position operates, adjusts, regulates, and maintains sodium hypochlorite feed systems, lime systems, coagulant pumps, potassium permanganate, polymer feeders and all other chemical systems, flowmeters and mechanical equipment, including residuals removal and the handling of equipment designed to meet water quality standards. Performs scheduled preventative maintenance work orders. Takes readings of varied gauges and records those readings, off-loading of chemical deliveries on site and at remote facilities, monitoring of the Commissions Residual Treatment Facility remotely and at site, will perform all related work as required.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Shift work required in a 24/7 operations environment.
  • Strong initiative to learn new position duties and progress in knowledge with the intent to become a licensed operator. (T, W, N)
  • High School degree or GED/equivalent is required.
  • Driver’s License is required.
  • Positive professional attitude.
  • Respect for the importance and magnitude of the work.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Proven interpersonal skills to work effectively in a team environment, cooperating with multiple layers of management.
  • Must demonstrate regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to lift 75 pound bags of various chemicals as needed.
  • Be free from physical or mental disabilities which would impair the proper performance of essential duties or which might endanger the health and safety of oneself or others.
  • Participate in all necessary training including Confined Space Entry, DPCC/DCR, Right to Know and other related training.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $50,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
