Hours: Full Time

Salary Range: $100,000-$150,000

Position Summary

The Chief of Staff (COS) works directly with the CEO to ensure high performance toward meeting the organization’s strategic goals. The Chief of staff will serve as an analyst, decision framer, project manager and change agent. They will build strong relationships with team members across the organization to influence outcomes and maintain momentum. The Chief of Staff will also work in close coordination with executive leadership, the Board of Directors and wider management teams to facilitate coordination, collaboration and cohesion on agency-wide goals and objectives.

Responsibilities:

Support Executive Director

  • Prepare, coordinate and follow-up with CEO meetings; develop briefing materials, agendas, and talking points to ensure that the CEO is fully engaged.

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and her Assistant on meeting prioritization and scheduling

  • Support the Executive Director on high-level emerging or urgent issues and lead response activities and communications.

  • Assist the Executive Director with external relations, including government and funders.

  • Manage CEO’s internal and external communications including pitch decks, speeches, presentations, correspondence and ensure timely responses and follow up.

  • Organize company retreats, conferences and other special events.


Strategic Planning and Alignment

  • Lead in the development and implementation of the organization’s strategic plan.

  • Help identify key performance indicators and update dashboards as needed

  • Work with the CEO and leaders to set strategic priorities.

  • Develop and monitor metrics for success and evaluate progress relative to strategic priorities.

  • Propose the creation of new systems and processes to streamline operations

Project Management

  • Oversee large, often cross-functional, organization-wide projects or initiatives; bring together stakeholders and help drive decisions.

  • Cultivate and lead change management strategies to facilitate transition and organizational growth.

  • Research, perform benchmarking, analyze data and make recommendations

Board Management

  • Collaborate and strategize with the CEO about Board relations, engagement, and best practices.

  • Lead timely preparation and distribution of Board materials

  • Attend select Board Committee meetings and record, circulate and finalize minutes.

  • Manage Board committee calendar and provide staffing support to Board committees

  • Maintain files, records and archives for all Board-related materials.

  • Proactively support Board members in their engagement with the organization.

  • Strategize and assist with Board recruitment and on-boarding

Qualifications:

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree, (Master’s degree preferred) with a specialization in nonprofit management, organization development, public administration, law, communications or a related field.

  • Requires a minimum of three years of progressive, related experience.

  • Excellent organization, project and time management skills.

  • Strong written communication skills.

  • Excellent oral communication and ability to effectively conduct public speaking.

  • Proven ability to navigate complex interpersonal relationships, promote morale and culture.

  • Ability to provide feedback and direction across teams.

  • Honed ability to identify risks/opportunities and identify appropriate course of action.

  • Strong level of attention to detail is required.

  • Must demonstrate sound judgment and discretion, ability to manage confidential information.

  • Demonstrated success in using data to manage performance and report impact.

  • Experience working in the nonprofit sector and a solid understanding of organizations that provide programs and services to people in the community.

  • Demonstrated ability to work within diverse communities; and maintain positive working relationships with volunteers, staff, donors and Board members.

  • Demonstrated ability to navigate solid relationships with donors, corporate executives, funders, and the media.

  • Must be able to work well under pressure and to handle several projects at one time.

  • Experience partnering with and supporting the Board of Directors is a plus.

  • Networks within Brooklyn and New York City are a plus.
