The Adult Vascular Access Team Nurse Clinician will function as a clinical nurse expert and care coordinator for the Adult Vascular Access Team, interfacing with administrative, clinical nursing staff, physicians and patients/families to ensure patients receive the most appropriate vascular access device available to accommodate the needs of their condition in the most timely, comfortable, and pain free method possible.
Vascular access team members will be trained in ultrasound technology, extended dwell catheter placement, and PICC placement.
Job Duties:

Collaborate with nursing staff and other health care professionals in the development and review of standards and in planning, implementing and evaluating patient care for a specific patient population

Provide direct nursing care, facilitate continuity of care and follow universal precautions
-
Coordinate and facilitate patient care between multiple disciplines including home health agencies, referring physicians and other community support services
-
Coordinate patient care to better utilize supportive services through patient visit and possible admission, pre-schedules testing, follows up with test results to both patient and physician, obtains medical history, coordinates follow up visit appointment, provides medication, rehabilitation teaching, etc.

Serve as a clinical resource or consultant for specific patient population

Participate in development and implementation of managed care programs for a specific patient population

Communicate with physicians and members of the health care team directing patient care

Manage and support Telephone Triage

Provide leadership for direct patient care programs in area of specialization collaborating with unit-based nurse management team(s)

Participate in decision-making process for financial management, operational budgetary decisions and cost containment strategies

Participate in/provide leadership for divisional, departmental and/or intra institutional and community committees and projects

Participate in the ongoing implementation of current regulatory standards in order to meet state and national agency accreditation

Perform other special projects and tasks as assigned

Design and implement patient/family health education activities for the patient population

Serve as an educational and clinical resource to patient/family/staff

Support the implementation and evaluation of staff education and orientation programs

Facilitate the educational experience for health care students and monitor the care delivered

Incorporate the role of patient care provider, advocate (patient, family, and health care professional), consultant, educator, researcher and quality manager

Participate in the development and implementation of division/unit quality assessment and improvement programs

Use relevant nursing research to improve clinical practice and investigate nursing care problems

Participate in development and conduct of research activities related to area of specialty

Responsible for maintaining clinical expertise consistent with patient population requirements and current nursing and medical practice

Adhere to professional and legal standards of nursing practice

Maintain confidentiality of patient and staff information

Percent of Time: 90% - 36 hours per week
Schedule: M-F, Day/Evening shifts with flexible scheduling between the hours of 8:00 AM-8:00 PM. M-F Possibility of weekend call 4x/year

Education Required
- A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Professional Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA) is required
Experience Required
- Reasonable 1-3 years (within the last 2 years) Acute Care nursing experience is required
- Demonstrated expertise with Acute Care patients is required
- Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required
- Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions
- General computer skills are required
Certifications
- Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire
Desirable Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Nursing or related field is highly desired
- Experience in a union environment is desired
- Knowledge of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics policies, procedures and regulations is desired
