Summary

Provide academic advising and a variety of services to support the progression, retention, and graduation of student veterans and student athletes.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide academic advising to veteran students as a primary or supportive advisor, depending on the academic program.
  • Staff the Veterans Resource Center (SVRC). Supervise and train student veteran workers using Department of Veterans Affairs Work-Study Program.
  • Assess, monitor, and track the needs of the current student veteran population and work with supportive departments to address identified needs.
  • Develop and implement individualized program plans using educational planning software; plan must be in compliance with U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and incorporate previous training, including ACE recommendations.
  • Coordinate registration and certify enrollment status by course for all military connected students using VA benefits also to include Military Tuition Assistance.
  • Assist Financial Aid with reporting the cost per course to state and federal agencies for students using VA educational benefits.
  • Maintain and update weekly activity of veteran files in conjunction with representatives from Financial Aid and the Student Accounts Office.
  • Review, and verify enrollment, academic status, and academic progression with the University Faculty Athletic Representative to ensure compliance with NAIA rules and regulations for athletic eligibility.
  • In consultation with faculty advisors, determine the best academic program for athletes to be in compliance with the NAIA Progress to Degree rule.
  • Monitor, assess and report term end permanent academic records of grades, academic probation and graduation dates of military connected student population.
  • Meet with state officials; attend local and regional conferences to remain informed of new policies and in accordance with all VA regulations.
  • Interpret program evaluation reports, assessment tests, transfer evaluations, articulation agreements and University policies and integrate the information into the Saint Xavier University curriculum.
  • Develop and deliver student veteran orientation and advising sessions.
  • Collaborate with the Student Veterans Alliance campus organization and serve as the Advisor to coordinate events for student veterans and supporters.
  • Assist with incoming student registration, Transfer Days, departmental and University events.
  • Maintain the Voluntary Education Partnership Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Department of Defense (DoD), Update tuition and fees annually as well as complete any compliance audits.
  • Gather data in conjunction with Office of Institutional Research and Planning to seek the Military Friendly® designation as well as other prestigious accolades.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required.

  • Bachelor's degree preferably in Education, Counseling, or related field. Master's degree and experience working in higher education preferred.
  • Ability to analyze academic programs and graduation requirements.
  • Experience with a University database; Colleague experience a plus.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Technical expertise, including the use of database and testing software.
  • Ability to travel locally and potentially out of state- access to automobile and a valid driver’s license is required.
  • Understanding of student populations with special academic and social needs; experience working with a diverse population of constituents is a definite plus!
