Characteristics of Job:
The Controller maintains all aspects of the institution’s financial accounting system, manages cash flow, prepares financial reports, establishes accounting policies and procedures to ensure that all financial transactions are executed and documented in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, manages the audit function of the institution, oversees the development and implementation of internal auditing procedures, and supervises the end of year audit process.
Examples of Duties or Responsibilities:
- Reviews, analyzes, and evaluates the financial records on a regular basis.
- Prepares, audits, balances, and analyzes annual and other financial statements.
- Preforms month-end and year-end closing activities.
- Coordinates internal and external auditing activities.
- Recording and disbursing new money for the endowment funds and calculating earnings for allocation.
- Prepares monthly journal entries.
- Monitors accounts receivable and accounts payable activities.
- Analyzes loan and old student accounts receivables to ensure appropriate allowances for bad debts.
- Requests federal funds for Title IV and other grants.
- Prepares monthly bank reconciliations.
- Manages investment funds by allocating the total investment cost and market values along with fees and income to the correct fund on a monthly basis.
- Communicates scholarship and loan account balances to the Financial Aid office.
- Assists with the preparation of the FISAP annual report.
- Provides the Advancement Office with monthly reports that show endowment book and market values.
- Assist Business office staff during peak operating times.
- Assists with Summer Orientation/Registrations.
- Manage special projects as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from a four-year college or university. MBA or
CPA/CMA is preferred
- A minimum of five years related work experience is required.
Qualifications:
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
- Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
- Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
- Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or board of directors.
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commission, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Knowledge of Accounting software; Database software; Internet software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
- Knowledge of theories, principles, and practices of advanced fund accounting and auditing.
