The Corrections Education Administrative Assistant is responsible for the operation of the corrections education offices at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility (FDCF) in Fort Dodge, Iowa and at the North Central Correctional Facility (NCCF) in Rockwell City, Iowa. Duties include waiting list management of student incarcerated individuals (inmates); compiling, accessing and maintaining student records; reporting education information to the Department of Corrections (DOC), the Iowa Department of Education (DOE) and Iowa Central Community College (ICCC); administering literacy and HiSET tests to students; and managing all education office matters to ensure the smooth operation of the department.


  • Makes initial contact with incarcerated individuals who do not have a high school or equivalency diploma and/or who read below a 6th grade reading level.
  • Compiles, maintains and updates a variety of hard copy and computerized student files and records.
  • Compiles student waiting lists for Literacy and HiSET classes.
  • Answers inquiries from incarcerated individuals and refers them to other staff members as needed.
  • Conducts CASAS and HiSET testing and maintains necessary documentation of test results. Responsible for security of tests as well as test administration integrity.
  • Follows the DOC’s security rules, policies and procedures including confidentiality and release of information.
  • Requests students’ education transcripts from other education agencies.
  • Answers requests for previous student records.
  • Assists with annual documentation for accreditation audits.
  • Compiles monthly incarcerated individuals’ payroll for education department students and workers.
  • Maintains inventory of materials, supplies, forms, etc. for the education department.
  • Assists in preparation of semi-annual graduation ceremonies.
  • Assists correctional staff in making sure incarcerated individuals are following DOC rules and policies.
  • Completes required training on a quarterly and annual basis.
  • Attends various meetings and professional development workshops as required for the DOC and ICCC.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

High school diploma required; Associates degree preferred.

Additional Qualification Requirements

Associates degree preferred. Must be able to prove proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience with Microsoft Access a plus. Must pass criminal/security check by the Department of Corrections.
