Curator - Western Heritage Museum Job at New Mexico Junior College
The Museum Curator shall be responsible to the Executive Director of the Western Heritage Museum & Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame. Duties and responsibilities shall be, but not limited to, the following: 1) Maintains a deep and broad understanding of the region encompassed by Southeastern New Mexico, its prehistory, history and modern influences on society. 2) Develops and maintains permanent records of the Museum collection and cares for the collection according to professionally acceptable standards. 3) Monitors and maintains the Museum environment as well as objects on exhibit, in storage and in transit. 4) Implements necessary changes to keep the collections safe and secure. 5) Maintains and works with a Collections Committee. 6) Maintains positive communication with donors and their families. 7) Works with Museum staff to create and bring in quality exhibitions. 8) Creates and maintains a master exhibition schedule and negotiates and maintains exhibit contracts. 9) Manages all incoming and outgoing loans including shipping and inventory. 10) Heads the set-up, maintenance, and disassembling of exhibits. 11) Works with Museum and NMJC staff to enhance the visibility and awareness and thus importance of the collections to the communities represented. 12) Contributes to publications produced through the Museum, such as the website, YouTube and the weekly e-newsletter. 13) Manages the services offered for reproductions, copies, replicas and other uses of the collections. 14) Works with the Museum staff to encourage and train staff, volunteers, interns, students and Board members to the importance of collections management and uses of the collections. 15) Maintains and updates the Museum’s web and social media pages. 16) Maintains departmental budget and supplies. 17) Looks for ways to continually make the Museum relevant and accessible. 18) Participates in a process of continual personal and professional improvement. 19) Actively participates in the institutional goals and objectives designed to support the mission of the college. 20) Reports to the Executive Director of the Museum 21) Serves on college committees as assigned. 22) Performs other duties as assigned or required. 23) Nothing contained herein shall limit the President in assigning the employee to various college activities for which he/she would be qualified in order to meet the needs of New Mexico Junior College.
Master’s degree in Museum Science, Museum Studies, or related field. Three (3) years of experience in collections management or curating as a museum professional; OR an equivalent combination or education, training, and experience.
