Data Engineer

What you'll be doing:

• Get in on the ground floor of building our first analytics environment from the ground up working with the expert team from our analytics vendor to ensure that our business and technical teams can make decisions based on sound data
• Equipping our customer-facing teams with the information they need to advance our relationships with our customers
• Creating interactive self-service solutions for our users, bringing data together in a meaningful way and building visualizations
• Work with multiple cloud and on-premise systems to bring data together in easy to understand ways
• Analyzing data and uncovering irregularities
• Own your work from start to finish: interviewing users, gathering problems, brainstorming, planning, implementing, testing, shipping, iterating until it's right, and operating it in production.
• Identify and prioritize work that has the greatest return on investment. We're constrained by engineering bandwidth, so we judiciously pick work that moves the needle the most.

About you:

• You've been building things with data at work or on the side for at least 2 years. If you've been wrangling data for many years, that's great too.
• You're interested in getting in early on a project to build an Azure environment with Azure Data Lake, Azure Synapse Data Platform and Power BI
• You like to own the components of the data infrastructure architecture for driving data science/analytics.
• You're a self starter. You like to investigate and learn the resources in your environment, understand what they're capable of, and use them to run the ball down the field. You're energized by being the first dedicated data person on the team.
• You like to utilize multiple BI reporting packages (PowerBI, Query Analyzer & Excel) to develop reports based on technical specs you'd define with stakeholders to allow users to analyze and manage data analytics.
• You like to stitch and normalize sparse and noisy data across various data sources, working with ETL tools and integrating data between separate platforms like ERP and CRM

Requirements:

• Experience with relational databases (such as SQL Server) and analytics databases
• BS in computer science, engineering, mathematics, statistics or a related field OR equivalent technical degree OR equivalent practical experience in data engineering.
• Understanding of data lake/warehouse architectures.
• Configuration and use of FTP solutions
• Database store procedures and user defined functions, data normalization, database sizing
• Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
• Proven ability to learn new concepts and technology quickly.
• Ability to work effectively with technical and business associates at all levels of the organization
• Open to new ideas and practices; and a willingness to adapt as needed.
• Able to understand directions and willingness to ask questions
• Demonstrated collaboration and communication skills across business and technology teams
• SQL Development experience including use of stored procedures, triggers, and query tuning
• Has an understanding of data modeling techniques (eg dimensional, 3NF)
• Development experience with at least one ETL tool; SSIS preferred
• Development experience with at least one BI tool; PowerBI preferred
• Has an understanding of data visualization techniques
• Progressive thinker and problem solver, with a strong ability to manage ambiguity/complexity.
• Work effectively in teams as well as independently across multiple tasks while meeting timelines.
• 2 years advanced SQL knowledge
• 1+ years SQL server
• 1+ years ETL tools
• 3 years experience in an IT environment - 2 years experience working with data tools
• 1+ years experience with data lake/warehouse architectures

Preferred:

• 2 years experience working with cloud analytics platforms
• 2 years experience working on conceptual & logical data models
• 2 years of relational data modeling experience
• Has experience utilizing APIs for data ingestion
• Configuration and use of third-party ERP connectors/API
