JOB TITLE: DCFS Co-Located Program Advocate
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: VP of Domestic Violence Services

POSTION SUMMARY:
To provide support to child welfare professionals working with families experiencing past or present domestic violence in order to enhance and strengthen the effectiveness of the child welfare intervention. This partnership specifically targets the shared goals of the domestic community and DCFS to end violence in Illinois families, reduce risk, ensure child safety, enhance the safety of adult survivors from the perpetrator, increase offender accountability, support parental strengths and protective capacities, promote safety, stability and wellbeing and to improve outcomes for children and families experiencing domestic violence. The Advocate also aims to improve communication and coordination among child welfare and other community based services and systems. The Co-located Advocate works closely with all programs and reports to the VP of Domestic Violence Services. This position will spend time at both the Rockford DCFS office and at Remedies Renewing Lives.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Consultation:
The purpose of the “consultation” is to help build the capacity of child welfare professionals to adequately understand and interpret the dynamics and impact of the domestic violence on the family and to craft effective interventions that enhance the safety and wellbeing of all members of the family.
Through the “consultation” role, the Advocate provides expert, “in the moment” guidance, advice, interpretation, professional opinions, and strategies related to domestic violence based upon the information gathered at the point of the consultation.
Direct Contact with Families:
The purpose of “Direct Contact with Families” is to assist and support the family during the child welfare intervention, and to gather and interpret information that forms the basis for the effective intervention governed by an Informed Consent process.
When engaging in “direct contact with families,” the Advocate can provide, information about child welfare, support and education on domestic violence, domestic violence safety planning, crisis intervention, advocacy, expedited access to domestic violence services, referral to other community or social services.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
Bilingual Spanish/English preferred.
Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills.
Skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, staff and the public.
Leadership and organizational skills.
Ability to be mobile, moving to various offices as needed.
Ability to lift minimum 20 lbs.

Ability to accept, to understand, and to relate sensitively to people of varied socioeconomic, racial, cultural, and experiential backgrounds.
Basic computer skills.
Demonstrate strong oral, presentation and written communication skills.
Skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, staff and the public.
EDUCATION:
Master’s degree in Social work, counseling or closely related field is preferred. Bachelor’s degree with 3-5 years direct service experience may be considered.
EXPERIENCE:
Experience in providing training in the area of domestic violence or related field and experience in providing individual, group, and family counseling.
