Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, the Dean is the senior academic and administrative officer of the College of Arts & Architecture and, as such, is responsible for working with senior administration, college faculty and staff in setting strategic, operational, and financial directions.
Consequently, the Montana State University College of Arts & Architecture seeks a creative, energetic, transparent, and respected leader to build on the considerable strengths and opportunities of the college.

Earned terminal degree
A record of accomplishment suitable for tenure as a full professor in a discipline appropriate to the College of Arts & Architecture
A record of progressively responsible administrative experience at a university that includes a similar degree of complexity
Academic administrative experience that includes budgeting as well as oversight for program development, recruitment and personnel evaluation and management
Excellent interpersonal communication skills, and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and access

These accredited professional schools offer programs that span traditional areas of study, such as the fine arts with highly technical emerging fields such as music technology. Nationally recognized programs in architecture and film draw significant numbers of out of state students. The college’s programs balance access with excellence and limited space by requiring students to pass through an entry portal (grade point average, portfolio review, audition) after one year of study.
The College of Arts and Architecture offers the following undergraduate degrees: Bachelor of Environmental Design (Architecture), BFA/BA (Studio Arts), BFA/BA (Graphic Design), BA (Art Education), BA (Art History), BA (Motion Picture/Video/Theater—Film), BA (Photography), BA (Music), Bachelor of Music Education, BA Music Technology. Graduate degrees consist of the Master of Architecture, Master of Fine Arts in Studio, Master of Art in Art History, Master of Music in Music Education, and Master of Fine Arts in Science and Natural History Filmmaking.
With more than 1,200 students or nearly 8% of the total MSU student body enrolled, the college offers 25 core courses in the arts including studio, history, and lecture. The faculty provides excellent instruction with intensive hands-on studio experiences, unique programs that are especially well suited to MSU academically and geographically and critical to the state—providing professional architects, designers and music educators in virtually every community.
Much of the research and creative activity in the college is vested in the individual activity of the faculty with strong records of publication, presentation, exhibition, competition, performance, and client based work. In addition, two research centers—Creative Research Lab and Integrated Design Lab—are part of the college.
Outreach is connected with individual faculty research and creative work. In addition, there are several notable programs focused on outreach including, Shakespeare in the Parks, Community Design Center, the Wild Clay Research Project, Science and Natural History Filmmaking, and Music Ensemble.
The dean will report directly to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. The College of Arts & Architecture has approximately 80 full-time faculty members and offers ten undergraduate options and six graduate programs. Each program is nationally accredited and recognized for excellence.
