Position Overview

The Earth and Environmental Systems Department at the University of the South seeks a tenure-track assistant professor at one of the nation's top liberal arts institutions.

Position Description

The Environment and Sustainability major at the University of the South is an interdisciplinary major housed within the Earth and Environmental Systems Department. The major draws heavily on transdisciplinary approaches to environmental issues and includes faculty from other departments including Biology, Economics, and Politics. Teaching responsibilities include regular participation in the introductory and upper-level environment and sustainability courses and courses within the candidate’s area of focus. The University has a 3/2 teaching load with both lecture and lab sections counting toward that total. The University provides support for scholarships and hosts an active Center for Teaching and Center for Leadership with several different mentoring and feedback programs. The 13,000-acre campus, known as the Domain, and the southern Cumberland Plateau region are tremendous environmental resources with the potential for intersection with many historical and current justice movements.

Attributes of a Successful Candidate

We seek candidates whose teaching and research interests center on environmental studies. Applications from candidates evaluating these issues from any disciplinary lens are welcome to apply. We seek candidates with expertise that can complement and/or expand the existing strengths of the faculty including environmental justice, climate change, sustainable land use, food production systems, watersheds, environmental health, energy, and more. Candidates whose research focuses on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion will be particularly welcome. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about embracing interdisciplinary approaches within the liberal arts context, have plans to integrate undergraduates into scholarship, and have the opportunity to grow and shape the direction of this major.

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, teaching and research statements, diversity, equity, and inclusion statement, and contact information for three references through the application portal at http://jobs.sewanee.edu. See more information about how we will evaluate each document. The review of applications will begin on October 24, 2022. Applications will continue to be accepted until the position is filled. We will initially screen applicants for their potential contributions toward University goals in justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Supplemental Information

Sewanee is committed to faculty working together in cohorts on new areas of focus: the 17 positions hired over the next two years will be invited to any of the following three cohorts: environment, data, and social justice. It is not imperative that a new faculty member join a cohort, but such relationships with colleagues will make for a more productive and fulfilling professional life. Sewanee will add 11 positions in the college this year, and another six next year. This year’s searches include environmental studies, two positions in English (fiction writing and playwriting), two positions in data science (computer science, statistics, or math), music (orchestral conducting), American politics, psychology, and theater (directing).

The University of the South, commonly known as Sewanee, comprises a nationally ranked residential College of Arts and Sciences and a School of Theology. The University is strongly committed to the values of intellectual inquiry, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and living and serving in community. Situated on 13,000 acres atop Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau, Sewanee is known for its stunning natural beauty while providing easy access to Chattanooga, Nashville, and Huntsville. The University is affiliated with the Episcopal Church and seeks to help employees of all backgrounds and identities flourish.
