Salary Range:

Starting at $118,690

DESCRIPTION

The Deputy Community Services Director - Parks and Recreation (Parks Services) is responsible for the maintenance and improvement activities covering the living and non-living infrastructure, as well as some programming within the parks and recreation system. Tempe’s diverse parks and recreational system includes neighborhood, community, and regional parks, sports complexes, desert preserves, golf courses, a professional baseball facility, and a historic cemetery. This role also oversees and supports Tempe’s citywide urban forestry program, including direct supervision of Tempe’s Urban Forester. In addition to overseeing operations across the division, the incoming Deputy Community Services Director will need to be prepared to provide collaborative leadership for key planning and implementation efforts.


Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Manage, direct, and organize a diverse and proactive program of services including park and preserve maintenance, Diablo Stadium complex operations, Double Butte cemetery, and golf courses.
  • Coordinate division activities with the community, other departments, outside agencies, and neighborhood organizations.
  • Provide staff assistance to the Community Services Director, City Manager, and City Council; prepare and present staff reports and other necessary correspondence.
  • Facilitate long-range planning and future maintenance activities.
  • Respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive inquiries, complaints, and requests for services from citizens in an open and creative manner. Communicate and provide information to the public through correspondence, interviews, and telephone calls.
  • Recommend, review, and coordinate the preparation of capital improvement plans and procurement of capital projects, operating budgets, and grant activities for parks and recreation facilities. Facilitate and monitor financial rate analyses and make recommendations to establish rates for golf services.
  • Prepare the division budget; assist in budget implementation; participate in the forecast of additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies; administer the approved budget.
  • Develop and review staff reports related to parks services; serve as a liaison to and present reports to the City Council, commissions, committees, and boards.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Work Experience:

Requires five (5) years of experience in parks or recreation administration including three (3) years of supervisory responsibilities.

Candidates must have the minimum amount of work experience. Years of experience are based upon a full-time work schedule (2,080 hours per year). The sum of an applicant’s full-time and/or part-time qualifying work experience must meet or exceed the stated minimum qualification. Education will not substitute for the required work experience; however, related unpaid and/or volunteer work experience may be used as qualifying work experience.


Education:

Requires a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in parks and recreation administration or degree related to the core functions of this position. A master’s degree is preferred.

The term “equivalent” means that directly related work experience exceeding the required work experience will substitute in equal time increments for college-level education, for example: one year of additional directly related work experience will substitute for one year of college education (30 credit hours).


Certifications, Licenses, and/or Registrations:

Possession of a valid driver’s license.
