The County Manager's Office is responsible to the seven-member Board of County Commissioners and the residents of Johnson County for the effective and efficient delivery of programs and services, using sound management and financial principles while emphasizing high ethical values, innovation, and continuous improvement. Under the direction of the County Manager, the Deputy County Manager leads the development of a high-performing organization by actively demonstrating the County’s Pillars of Performance, mentoring and collaborating with employees at all levels of the organization, and empowering those around them in the pursuit of the County’s mission, vision, and strategic goals. The position acts as deputy chief administrative officer of the County, working collaboratively with the County Manager, Assistant County Managers, Board of County Commissioners, and County executive team to provide strategic leadership to the organization, advance special projects and initiatives, and collaborate with department and agency heads to achieve County objectives.

This includes researching and weighing in on a broad spectrum of County matters, recommending consultants and contractors, and assisting the County Manager in preparing, presenting, and administering the annual budget. As an important member of the County Manager’s Office, this role also promotes teamwork and information-sharing, assists in developing short- and long-term goals, leads capital improvement project efforts, helps determine staffing requirements, and resolves personnel issues. Its direct reports will be dependent on the selected candidate’s background and expertise. In addition to directing and managing their assigned departments and agencies, the successful candidate will represent Johnson County at the local, state, and federal levels by serving on various committees, coalitions, and organizations and acting as a liaison between those outside groups and County staff. Finally, this position serves as Acting County Manager as needed in their absence.
The County is offering a highly competitive salary for this position, dependent on qualifications and experience. The 2023 salary range for the position is currently up to $237,919. A market salary study is in progress, which is expected to increase the range. This position is also eligible for other incentives, such as relocation reimbursement, accelerated vacation accruals, and a sign-on bonus.

This position requires a bachelor’s degree in public administration, business, or a related field as well as 10 years of progressively responsible, professional-level related experience, including 5 years as a supervisor. Master’s degree and local government management experience is preferred, but any combination of experience and education that provides candidates with the required qualifications may be considered.
