Direct Support Professional Job at Kennett Ability Network
Kennett Ability Network Kennett Square, PA
A unique opportunity to not only provide training, support, and care to a delightful young woman with IDD, but to also participate in innovative community-based programs of adaptive recreation and environmental stewardship for people like her. A very detailed description of the Kennett Ability Network (KAN) and the DSP position is available at www.kanworks.org/work-at-kan
I originally launched KAN to identify volunteer, recreation, and work opportunities for my daughter, Margot. I realized that others like Margot might benefit, and that a community of families like ours might help to assemble the support needed to meet the full range of our children’s needs.
As a KAN DSP, you work 2-3 days/week directly with Margot to help extend her existing skills to new sites as she transitions out of school, and build new sites and skills. Some of these include programs in development for Margot and others in environmental stewardship (in collaboration with the Land Trust Alliance), for hiking paths and nature trails (in collaboration with Kennett Outdoors and Chester County Mental Health and Intellectual / Developmental Disability Services), and a respite recreation program (in collaboration with the Kennett YMCA). The position will likely include other responsibilities related to preparing materials for lessons and programs.
We are looking for individuals who have worked in direct support roles in school or residential programs - especially those with an emphasis on Applied Behavior Analysis - to help develop and deliver Margot’s program. I share training and support responsibilities for DSPs with a Community Services Coordinator we are also seeking to hire,. We are looking for someone able to start 2-3 days per week on August 28 or shortly thereafter, and are especially interested in someone able to spend several days with Margot in June, July, and August shadowing her current school staff. Margot’s direct care will be shared for the first 4-6 months between her Community Services Coordinator and DSP(s) as new skills and sites are established. After this point, it will be delivered almost exclusively by a team of DSPs. Please contact us if you are seeking full-time work, as there are other families we are working with who are looking for similar help, and we can coordinate schedules with them.
I have run school and hospital programs serving thousands of children with disabilities, and trained and supervised hundreds of staff, so I know what we have to build into our program to support the dedicated professionals working with our children. We include time to plan activities and to meet as a team and with community partners. We maximize the fun for Margot and for you - for example, her schedule includes hiking and biking each week, and skiing in the winter-time. And of course we minimize the paperwork. So join our family!
