Job Description
Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
- Provides guidance in academic and personal development in a collaborative and mentoring environment.
- Translates strategic and tactical business plans into operational plans. Fosters interaction between advisors and students in a supportive atmosphere where students will achieve self-sufficiency while implementing their educational goals to reach degree completion.
- Establishes the direction, goals, and implementation strategy, and policies of the unit. Partners with Department/Unit to advocate for student-athlete needs related to enrollment management and degree progression.
- Develops short and long-term goals for the Hartley Academic Resource Center.
- Designs and implements plans to assist student-athletes in enhancing their skills and maintaining successful advancement toward their degree program.
- Advises senior administrators in implementing programs, new initiatives, and special projects.
- Manages academic advising staff to include recruitment, assignment of duties, performance evaluation, and training.
- Maintains regular communication and meetings with other Advising Directors and serves as primary liaison to the Assistant Vice President for University Advising Services.
- Develops and supports the ongoing delivery of a new advisor training program, and provides professional development opportunities for Academic Advisors
- Participates in campus and community recruitment and outreach events (such as: Eagle Expo, Say Yes to the Nest, Weeks of Welcome, and State College partnerships).
Other Duties:
- Represents the unit to external and internal constituents on all issues related to the Hartley Academic Resource Center.
- Provides term and annual reports on student-athlete academic achievement as requested.
- Serves as the primary academic liaison to selected sport teams, responsible for working intrusively with individual at-risk student-athletes and monitoring the academic and degree progress of all individual team members.
- Communicates regularly and effectively with selected team coaching staff members.
- Represents the Hartley Academic Resource Center on the athletic academic certification committee.
Additional Job Description
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Higher Education & Student Affairs, Counselor Education, Psychology, or closely related field.
- Ten years of professional full-time experience working in an academic advising environment.
- Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
- Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Six years of experience in academic advising, NCAA compliance, sports management, higher education administration or related field in higher education.
- Experience advising student-athletes at a Division I university and supervising college students.
- Programmatic development and assessment experience.
- Experience using academic advising-related technology, such as Microsoft Office, Banner, Degree Works, Appointment Manager, and Florida Shines.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of NCAA rules related to continuing and initial eligibility, benefits, and recruiting visits.
- Knowledge of FERPA, state statutes, and rules of higher education within the state of Florida.
- Knowledge of theoretical models of student development, academic advising, and development advising.
- Knowledge of advising theory and models of development advising.
- Skill in problem solving, mediation, and dispute resolution.
- Skill in teaching or public speaking.
- Skill in coordinating, planning, and organization.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, particularly with diverse populations.
- Skill in collecting and analyzing data related to student success.
- Ability to utilize data and information to make decisions and projections.
- Ability to effectively plan and delegate the work of others.
- Ability to build positive rapport with a variety of constituents.
- Ability to establish and maintain a positive rapport with a University staff, faculty, students, and general public.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with others or in teams.
