Director of Finance Job at Cambium Learning Group
The Director of Finance role will provide strategic and tactical leadership of the financial functions of one of the largest K-12 student assessment and testing companies in the US. This position works as a crucial liaison between Finance, Contracts, and Technical Operations to ensure the business’s contractual, financial reporting, and analysis needs are met for the business unit and flowing up to the parent corporation. This position will serve as a key source of expertise throughout the entire project life cycle including but not limited to cost analysis, competitive proposal and contracting price-to-win strategies, project planning, execution cost analysis, and closeout. The position will report to the Vice President of Finance for Cambium Assessment (CAI).
Job Responsibilities
- Lead the effort of cost and price fixed price proposals in response to RFPs. This requires deep understanding of the CAI's products and services required to support project fulfillment upon award.
- Assist with preparation of CAI's annual budget and project budgets, monitor performance of the same and develop action plans to achieve financial goals as necessary for all critical financial indicators including but not limited to revenue, components of revenue, profit/fee, indirect costs, investment costs, backlog, receivables, and unbilled receivables.
- Develop and manage professional development activities for all staff supervised, including day-to-day operational needs such as related to company financial systems as well as long term broadening of knowledge base in financial and contractual subject matters.
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation of all client billings, and that staff appropriately expedite account receivables not received within contractually defined payment terms.
- Work with controller to create standard financial reports that present relevant financial indicators to project management, senior finance management, Senior Leadership Team and senior corporate management who are responsible for attaining project, Business Unit and corporate goals. Analyze the same and provide recommendations to guide CAI toward financial and business goals.
- Provide financial stewardship advice and training, and promote financial knowledge among the CAI technical operations staff in support of project finances. Increase financial understanding via outreach and communication especially in high risk areas, e.g., regulatory compliance, fixed price contracts, etc.
- Develop and manage tracking and forecasting models for CAI direct, indirect, research & development and investment funds, as well as cost allocation methodologies for shared services and unique pricing opportunities.
- Liaise with legal counsel on compliance, intellectual property, and other complex contractual considerations.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance/Business Administration required, and MBA or equivalent preferred.
- A minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience in a similar role with exposure to state, commercial, and/or federal government clients.
- Experience managing a diverse team of financial professionals.
- Advanced written and oral communication, organizational and analytical skills.
- Proven track record of gaining in-depth knowledge of the services and/or product cost elements necessary to successfully bid new work and track actual costs against bid costs.
- Expert level proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to see the big picture but also able to dig in to be hands-on with all the details.
- Experience blending commercial entrepreneurship into a state government contracting environment a plus.
- A blend of experience from both a large, diverse professional services/product firm and as a leader in a small, niche organization is a plus.
