General Responsibilities:

Florida Rural Legal Services Inc is seeking an Intake Specialist to work under our Disaster Relief Assistance Grant for our Regional Offices (Ft. Myers, Lakeland, WPB/Riviera Beach, and Ft. Pierce). This role will be a contract role for 1 year with the possibility to extend. The Intake Specialist are the initial telephone point of contact for all new clients. This is a professional position under the supervision of the Hotline Managing Attorney.

Essential Functions

  • Efficiently and accurately complete intake questionnaires, open file, and transfer to office.
  • Determine client eligibility in accordance with LSC and Grant regulations and other funding criteria.
  • Initially assess applicant’s legal problems and check for conflicts of interest and current files.
  • Refer ineligible applicants to other sources of assistance and give appropriate information as instructed.
  • Provide fax number to applicants to fax documents.
  • Transfer eligible applicant’s cases to the appropriate Attorney or other designee or transfer applicants who are eligible for services through the Advice Line directly to the hotline.
  • If the case needs to be referred to another legal services provider, e-mail to Grant Attorney.
  • Assist with training new screeners as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Typing skills of 50 WPM and the ability to enter data into computer.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to forge positive relationships with prospects, colleagues and the community.
  • Good organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently.
  • Must be able to effectively and efficiently maximize existing resources.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) and CMS.
  • Must be able to effectively work in high pressure situations which involve deadlines.
  • Must be able to maintain professional demeanor while working with the public.
  • Must be able to maintain positive working relationships while under pressure.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of basic legal terminology and simple business mathematics.
  • Familiarity with the judicial system and a wide range of social services.
  • Ability to interview to determine essential facts with respect to eligibility and initial case assignment.
  • Spanish and/or Haitian Creole required
  • Prior experience in a call center, social service agency or law firm preferred.

Physical requirements

  • This is a largely sedentary role, however, some lifting of office supplies up to 20 pounds may be required.
