Job Summary

Geisinger Emergency Medicine Medical Directors provide leadership and management for the Emergency Department (ED), working cooperatively with the ED nursing staff and other departments to provide emergency services for all patients who present to the ED for care. The successful applicant will be expected to work their administrative and clinical time at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center.

Job Duties

  • To provide leadership, planning, organization, staffing, coordination, and evaluation for ED activities
  • To supervise and evaluate emergency physicians in clinical and assigned administrative duties
  • To act as liaison with hospital administration and other clinical departments
  • To ensure adequate physician staffing with qualified physicians and where appropriate advanced practitioners
  • To promote a collaborative, interdisciplinary ED leadership team
  • To ensure that departmental policies are known, understood, and implemented by the emergency physicians
  • To participate in personnel, purchasing, and procedural changes in the ED
  • To participate in the education and training of residents, medical students, and other health care providers
  • To work with the Public Relations Department to provide an appropriate media spokesperson for emergency care-related questions or events
  • To recruit and retain qualified physicians and advanced practitioners
  • To schedule regular departmental meetings
  • To participate in long-range planning for facility design or modification, equipment acquisition, and new services.
  • To act as an interface between hospital legal representatives and risk management personnel concerning ED legal issues.

Financial:

  • To participate in the annual budget process and long-range financial model process
  • To monitor and understand changes in emergency medicine reimbursement
  • To monitor ED financial performance
  • To participate in annual compensation adjustments for physicians
  • To participate in pricing adjustments for emergency services

Quality:

  • To collaborate with the ED leadership team and administration to ensure that departmental performance meets or exceeds standards described in the hospital bylaws, departmental policies, the PADOH, the Joint Commission Manual of Accreditation, and in other appropriate local and national standards
  • To proactively address issues that may impair access to emergency care
  • To monitor advances in emergency care and initiate change as needed to ensure that ED services and capabilities are dynamic and progressive
  • To establish and maintain an ED Quality Assurance/Risk Management program
  • To assist the ED Leadership Team to prepare the department for site visits by appropriate licensing/accrediting agencies
  • To collaborate with the ED leadership team to ensure that the rules governing the functioning of the ED are followed

Committees:

Determined and assigned as directed by the CMO, Chair of Geisinger Medicine Institute, or Chair of Department of Emergency Medicine.

Reporting Structure:

The Medical Director will report to the Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine.

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

  • Demonstrated ability to comprehend, speak and write the English language
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Demonstrates the ability to maintain accurate and legible progress notes

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Career emergency physician with proven clinical and administrative skills
  • Board-certified in emergency medicine by ABEM or AOBEM
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability in the financial, managerial, and marketing aspects of emergency medicine
  • Demonstrated ability to speak on the administrative and clinical matters related to emergency medicine
