Public Benefit Specialists play an important role by analyzing data and providing DSHS resources or benefits to those in need, these resources help people pick themselves up and begin again.

This job is a great entre-level role learning the public assistance services that DSHS offers and provides a foot-in-the-door at the local Economic Services Administration offices.

What we’re looking for from your local Veteran or military family member:

· A Bachelor's degree*

· And, experience examining/processing medical insurance or rehabilitation claims, unemployment insurance claims, or in a customer service job where the major duties involve public contact; or, one year of equivalent out-of-state experience conducting financial eligibility determination for public assistance to include financial, medical and food stamp programs

· Ability to proficiently use a computer and multiple computer applications, including MS Office, database entry, and websites

*A job providing staff support in financial eligibility determination will substitute, year for year, for education

We are looking for a person that has a willingness to learn and possibly build a career in public service with DSHS. Someone that is able to communicate effectively with people in difficult situations, including calming people; assist people with communication issues and those in underserved populations, and discuss unpleasant options, in person and over the phone, with clients. They should also have the ability to work with complex regulations and procedures, and analyze complex situations.

NOTE: Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history may be conducted.

  • Manage a financial workload of intake, initial and on-going eligibility determinations, and maintenance for Financial, Child Care, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and Medicaid Assistance programs
  • Conduct intensive interviews to determine eligibility
  • Gather and review data, documents, and verification for each benefit program
  • Process all case actions in accordance with Federal and State requirements
  • Explain program requirements, application procedures, and verification needs, as well as answer all questions regarding benefits or available services to clients
