JOB SUMMARY
Status: 40 hours/week; $18 dollars an hour

Organization Description: Refugee & Immigrant Self-Empowerment, Inc. (RISE), formerly known as the Somali Bantu Community Association (SBCA), was founded by
Somali Bantu refugees in 2004 to ease the transition of other members of the resettled Somali Bantu community living in Onondaga County. With the influx of refugees that come to Syracuse, RISE remains committed to assisting the diverse refugee and immigrant communities in Onondaga County. Our programs are targeted at promoting self-sufficiency through employment, education, and economic empowerment.
Position Summary
This position will directly ensure the success of the department’s largest initiative while assisting the Education Director with the implementation of all educational programming within the department.
The position will be entrusted with key responsibilities that require an adaptable candidate comfortable working with ambiguity in a fluid environment capable of wearing several hats to ensure that the programming objectives are met. Conceptually this position can be thought of in two halves, with one half ensuring the success of the afterschool program and the other half contributing to the success of the department as a whole.
To meet the needs of the afterschool program the Education Coordinator will act as the project manager. The afterschool program will require a flexible schedule with availability in the evenings on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 4:00 – 8:00 pm. To support the coordinator in managing a successful program a staff of three assistant coordinators, two interns, and up to 30 tutors will be provided. The education coordinator will be responsible for the success of the program and its participants by ensuring the needs for the program are met and improved upon including communication, administration, documentation, etc. necessary for the program and its participants to thrive are completed.
The second primary responsibility of the Education Coordinator will be assisting the director in the administration and implementation of education initiatives. The successful implementation of education initiatives will require the coordinator to be familiar with the grants that support the department’s individual programs to assure activities, data collection, and reporting are on track to meet the expectations outlined in grant documentation. Organization and outreach are important components necessary to meet the needs of the position. Being flexible with workflow and comfort working in a fluid environment are must have skills to excel in the position.
JOB DUTIES
1. Develop and implement curriculum for a diverse group of youth ages K-12 that follows the Syracuse City School District education objectives;
2. Digitize records to maintain a database of curriculum, attendance, classroom activities, etc.;
3. Conduct outreach to raise program attendance;
4. Research new opportunities for partnerships with local organizations;
5. Communicate with current partners to enhance collaboration;
6. Recruit new students by creating recruitment materials, reaching out to other departments within RISE, and forging connections with community-based organizations to grow the program;
7. Record and track data for reporting;
8. Report on program activities for internal and external review;
9. Complete progress reports regarding the current state of the program;
10. Provide support to fellow staff within the education department as necessary for the improvement of the department;
11. Meet with internal and external stakeholders to support the needs of the organization;
12. Complete administrative and logistic tasks related to the program;
13. Assist RISE as an organization with assigned tasks when requested by the Director of Education;
14. Attend and directly manage the afterschool program (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 4:30 – 8:30 pm);
15. Have a firm understanding of the grants that support the department;
16. Complete reports for internal and external distribution;
17. Collect and compile data from program initiatives;
18. Adapt with the program as priorities adjust to fit the needs of the organization and program participants;
19. Be responsive in the support provided to the educational team and director in the pursuit of programming objectives;
20. Supervise RISE employees, interns, and volunteers;
21. Prepare educational materials for students;
22. Document student work;
23. Coordinate with students and staff for transportation;
24. Communicate programming needs with community partners;
25. Ensure an environment conducive to learning is maintained during educational programs;
26. Inventory and order programming supplies;
27. Manage the logistics necessary to keep programming locations well-stocked;
28. Prepare the physical space before programming and ensure the space is tidied after program completion;
29. Monitor interaction of students and tutors;
30. Digitize documents and programing materials such as attendance records, student worksheets, etc.;
31. Direct interns to assist with program implementation objectives;
32. Organize learning materials and department supplies;
33. Manage, assess, and track purchase requests;
34. Oversee implementation of curriculum that mirrors the Syracuse City School District instructional guidelines;
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree;
- 1-2 years of experience in the workplace;
- Comfort with ambiguous assignments working within a fluid environment;
- The ability to engage in diverse tasks covering a wide-breadth of deliverables;
- Firm grasp of technology common to office spaces (Microsoft Office suite, Zoom, Google Drive, etc.);
- Adaptability is a must, understanding that the role will evolve over time to fit the needs of the program;
- The ability to work a flexible schedule outside standard office hours, especially during the evenings from 4:30 – 8:30 pm;
- Excellent communication skills in English, including speaking and writing, with the ability to relate to diverse populations of all ages and backgrounds;
- Comfort being the driving force behind program implementation;
- The ability to take initiative to enhance service delivery and innovate the current approach to programming;
- Familiarity with educational programming, prior classroom experience is a plus;
- Clean driving record;
- The ability to shuttle supplies, and if necessary participants, between program locations;
