We were founded in 1972 to protect the largest urban, old-growth forest in the United States, a 200-acre tract in Evansville, Indiana now known as Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve. Our mission is to create experiences which connect people with nature, motivate them to lead sustainable lives, and take action to protect wildlife and wild places. This position seeks a self-motivated, creative individual with excellent organizational and communication skills. The Environmental Educator has the primary responsibility of implementing WW educational programs, and developing new programs in alignment with the mission and goals of our Education Department. The Environmental Educator must be willing to help organize and assist with educational resources, community engagement activities, partner meetings, etc. This Environmental Educator would ideally have experience working and communicating with a diverse age range from early learners to adults. You must be comfortable with indoor and outdoor family experiences at a range of WW locations, and you should have or be willing to develop the cultural competence to serve diverse families. Environmental Educators must be able to pass a criminal and sex offender background check. Duties Include Develop education programs, prepare content, design activities, and coordinate program delivery; Conduct environmental education programs delivered through a variety of platforms: activities at the WW campus (including Howell Wetlands), community outreach programs, camps, field trips, schools programs (off-site or at WW), workshops, etc.; Provide naturalist training and education to staff, volunteers, and board members; Coordinate animal encounters with the Wildlife Curator & Educator; Maintain inventory of education materials, supplies, and resources; Coordinate with the Director of Natural Resources & Research staff to ensure proper stewardship of our natural resources and property; Cultivate working relationships with schools, other organizations, and local businesses; Collect data for program monitoring, evaluation, and grant writing purposes; Assist with preparing a long-term environmental literacy strategy; Prepare materials and supplies for programs and events; Assist the Director of Environmental Education in the development and coordination of WW educational programs and activities as needed; Serve as staff in charge as assigned on evenings and weekends. Qualifications Knowledge of environmental and ecological concepts and processes, including basic knowledge of bioregional flora and fauna; Ensure that visitors, donors, partners/sponsors, and community members experience unmatched hospitality, generosity and graciousness at WW; Share fundraising and revenue-generating ideas, grant opportunities, and donor prospects with appropriate staff. Represent WW in a professional, positive, collaborative manner; Practice stewardship of all resources, both natural and financial/material; Seek professional development and continuous improvement; Ability to effectively work with and supervise the activities of volunteer personnel; Ability to plan and deliver effective, high-quality, and relevant presentations to a wide variety of audiences; Effective communication, interpersonal, and intrapersonal skills; Ability to do moderate physical labor, including walking over rough terrain and lifting or carrying 50 pounds; Most importantly, have an open mind, thrive on innovation, and have fun! This position directly reports to the Director of Environmental Education. This position works in tandem with the Director of Environmental Education, the Director of Natural Resources & Research, and the Wildlife Curator & Educator.
