Hours: Two hours per day

We now produce 50 dozen eggs a day, often selling out at the farmstand in summertime. In the off-season our eggs are available at Cronig’s Markets, Alley’s General Store and at our Farmstand.

The Egg Collector is responsible for the daily collection of eggs from the 800 hen layer flock, triple rinsing the eggs, grading and packing the dry eggs from the day before, labeling the cartons and placing them in crates.

In our daily work, we:

  • Collect eggs from each of the four hen rooms, scan the floor for eggs laid there instead of in nests, take note of feed and water to respond to possible emergencies, record number of eggs from each room on the chart.
  • Carry egg baskets downstairs to the washing room and rinse according to washing protocol.
  • Pack eggs by 4 sizes and label accordingly. Check weight approximations by use of occasionally weighing samples.
  • When eggs are all rinsed, packed, labeled and crated, sweep basement floor, two sets of stairs and two hen-room corridors.
