Position Summary

The Health Assistant, under the supervision of the Helth Director and under the standing orders and technical direction of a licensed physician in the nearby community, is responsible for overseeing and promoting the general health, safety, and sanitation of the campers, staff, and entire camp. The Health Assistant will help distribute medicaitons, assist campers with all health realated needs. Camp Lakota is a Girl Scout overnight camp that serve girls in grades 2-12. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

GSGLA Lakota Overnight Camp

The Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles Camp Lakota is a state of the art, recently updated residential camp. Located just 90 miles from downtown Los Angeles, this premier camp site will host a full summer camp season. The camp will focus on providing a stand-out girl-led experience for campers of all ages and communities across our 6, 272 square mile footprint. The camp offers a variety of specialty activities including a high ropes challenge course, horseback riding, swimming, and archery.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
1. Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures during camp programs.

  • Ensure that ACA standards, state codes, and guidelines from GSGLA are being followed.
  • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
  • Set a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
  • Provide guidelines for programs utilizing camp equipment.
  • Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures in all program areas.

2. Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in all program areas.

  • Assist in daily checks of area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and in good repair.
  • Ensure that program areas are kept fee of hazards and debris.

3. Supervise and evaluate Activity Supervisors and Specialists to develop and implement all facets of camp program activities.

  • Regularly monitor work of Activity Supervisors/Specialists.
  • Provide feedback and guidance to Activity Supervisors/Specialists.
  • Provide recommendations and concerns to Camp Director regarding staff performances.
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, providing support and guidance to those assigned as leaders.
  • Maintain clear and positive written and verbal communication with all camp staff.

4. Develop and implement schedules and records for all areas of camp program and facilities.

  • Support staff in the creation of program and activity schedules.
  • Develop and supervise staff schedule for programs and activities.
  • Collect and evaluate records; report and evaluate camp program and activity areas.

5. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications (Minimum Education and Experience)

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Experience in both children and adult illness/injury care.
  • College degree preferred.
  • Documented progressive supervisory experience.
  • Documented experience in senior staff roles at organized camps, especially overnight camps.
  • Ability to drive, possession of a valid drivers license, and clean DMV record.
  • Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR prior to first day of work.
  • Must submit health history form prior to first day of work.
  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Must be committed to work the entire camp season and attend all pre-camp trainings.
  • Ability to live onsite acting as an on-duty supervisor for the duration of the camp season.

Physical Requirements

  • The incumbent must be able to perform this job safely, without endangering the health or safety of him/herself or others.
  • Communicates and works with all ages and skill levels and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  • Observes camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Needs to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Constantly responds appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Frequently moves luggage, tables, chairs, and program equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Needs to traverse and move several miles daily, at various grades, elevations, and on uneven terrain.
  • Possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.
  • Needs to sustain activity at 6,000 feet (1830 meters) in elevation.
  • Must be able to live in a rustic camp setting and work flexible hours.
  • Operate with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.
