Position Specifications

Incumbents in this position are responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing specialized emergency training programs and tracking training of Fire Division licensed ambulance personnel. Duties include developing and instructing all EMS new employee orientation/refresher courses as well as EMT-B courses for Probationary Fire Privates; tracking license expiration dates and assisting with renewals; writing specifications for new training equipment; and providing emergency care in training context.

Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma or General Educational Development (G.E.D.) certificate; plus two years of clinical experience as an EMT-P, EMT-B; or licensure as a registered nurse or physician with at least two years of clinical experience. OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS: Candidates must possess and maintain all of the following licenses and certifications at the time of filing application and while employed by the City of St. Louis:

  • State of Missouri EMT-P License;
  • License: Must possess and maintain a valid Missouri driver's license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of filing application and be able to present license upon request. Please note type of license, number, class and expiration date on the Employment Application; and
  • Documentation of instructor status in one of the following: Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS); Basic Life Support (BLS); International Trauma Life Support (ITLS); Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS); or experience as a laboratory or guest instructor with an EMS training entity.

VETERAN'S PREFERENCE POINTS: To be eligible for veteran's preference points, the applicant must submit a copy of their DD 214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty with the Employment Application or upon request. The Director of Personnel may, in their discretion, accept alternate documentation.

CITY RESIDENTS PREFERENCE POINTS: City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points. City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
