EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN

Ground Services Department Nonexempt

Reports to: Station Supervisor/Manager


Summary/Objective

Under general supervision, provides basic level emergency and non-emergency care to the ill and injured, to include assessment of illness and/or injury, management of such patients, preparation for transport, transfer of information, and patient care.

Essential Functions

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Provide basic life support treatment of patients

  • Provide CPR, give oxygen, administer glucose; all with in the EMT scope of practice

  • Safely operate and maintain an emergency vehicle while in compliance with all laws pertaining to the operation of an emergency vehicle while transporting patients

  • Render competent patient care in both pre-hospital and inter-facility setting

  • Thorough knowledge of EMS procedures and ability to integrate knowledge and performance into practical situations

  • Interact professionally with other health care personnel

  • Interact professionally with disabled, disadvantaged, sick and injured persons

  • Work as part of a team

  • Accurately and completely document information required in EMS charts, including PCRs, daily vehicle inspections, and daily inventory checks

  • Assists other EMS providers with EMS care

  • Give report verbally or in writing to higher healthcare facilities

  • Clean the equipment, check and replace the used and damaged supplies

  • Compliance with all company and local agency policies, procedures, and applicable protocols for emergency treatment and transportation

  • Attend refresher programs and continuing education required by medical director

  • Maintain a clean appearance, demonstrating courteous, professional and ethical behavior

Work Environment

  • Physically strenuous and can be emotionally stressful, sometimes involving life-or-death situations.

  • May be exposed to infectious diseases, hazardous chemicals, and other dangerous substances. May encounter environmental extremes, violent individuals, and numerous other hazards.

  • Work in varied weather conditions.

  • At times will have long, unpredictable hours

Physical Demands

  • Physically strenuous and can be emotionally stressful, sometimes involving life-or-death situations

  • Bending, sitting, kneeling, moving and lifting patients and equipment

  • Must be able to drive/ride in ambulance for long periods of times without issue

  • Must possess physical agility necessary to lift and move patients safely


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Rotating shifts

  • Full and Part time positions

  • Overnights and weekends


Travel

  • At times, the EMT will travel from one station to another to help with coverage.

  • Position requires traveling by either driving an ambulance or caring for a patient in an ambulance.

Required Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Basic Life Support

  • CPR & First Aid Certified

  • Current state EMT Certification

  • Current state driver’s license


Preferred Education and Experience

  • National Registry EMT Certification

Additional Eligibility Requirements

  • Must pass company provided PCP physical capacity profile exam (post offer, pre- employment)

  • Meet company policy MVR criteria

  • Must successfully complete company sponsored EVOC
